Are You a Fan of Tyler Perry Movies?

Earlier this week I had a conversation with my husband about Tyler Perry and his movies.  We were discussing why it’s so widely accepted as funny when a Black man puts a dress on?  That’s a topic for further discussion, however, dress or no dress Tyler has won me over.  I didn’t want to like his Chitlin’ circuit brand of humor and never went to see any of his stage plays.  But after I saw his first feature film, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” I was hooked.

For the same reason I love Lifetime movies, I appreciate Mr. Perry’s flair for melodrama.  And in the midst of all the Madea wisecracks, the he/she did me wrong, and Lord why can’t I find a good man drama, at their core, his movies are about old-fashioned family values and the Black church as the foundation for the Black family and community.

Kimberly Elise starred in "Diary of a Mad Black Woman."

Most importantly, the self-made film mogul’s films celebrate Black women, and he’s given talented actresses such as Angela Bassett, Kimberly Elise, Alfre Woodard, and Taraji P. Henson starring roles they would never have received in mainstream Hollywood films.

I’d love to hear your two cents.  Are you a fan of Tyler Perry’s movies?

I like Tyler Perry, his stage shows were funny, but sent a message and his movies are great too. There are many who do not like his movies or the stage shows. I think the man has talent, and it is good old entertainment.
I have no problems with him playing Madea, some think he may be gay, if he is
whatever, I think he is talented, and he has given a lot of people a lot of laughter. I remember a older lady who is sick, she has various ailments. She said Tyler Perry, character madea, and his movies, has brighten up her day when she was down.

i love Tyler Perry movies and plays. To me the Madea character is a culmination of every woman in my family. The good the bad and the ugly. There’s always a level of truth in everything he does and it’s told with flair and funny.

He celebrates women, and that is a blessing, but he seems to make guys look like tyrants and/or spineless… That is OK because some are, but as a Black man, I do not see him showing how we get our hearts crushed by women cheating, not committing, or the like… Don’t be one sided. Just be fair and balanced is my gripe…
