Before I was a hair slut…er…hair writer, and it was my job to jump from salon to salon trying treatments, I was in a monogamous relationship.
And that was with a boutique-sized salon in Brooklyn named G Concepts.
I got many of my first Japanese straightening there, and when the salon started to offer variants of the Brazilian Keratin treatment I was all over it.
So, a few weeks ago, as a birthday present to me, I went back there, and got my BKT done just in time for the holidays. I love it!
For those not in the know – the keratin treatment is the choice of many who are scared of the hair-abuse involved in the Japanese treatment – but I personally do BOTH. So, it’s like adding a force field to my hair between thermal treatments. I love Japanese straightenings because they are permanent – except for new growth, obviously -BKT (Brazilian Keratin Treatment) is more like a semi-permanent solution. It lasts about 2.5 months (depending on how often you wash your hair) and it leaves your hair shiny with body, less curly but not pin straight, easy and quick to blow dry.
My mom swears by it because her hair is color-treated and Japanese isn’t a safe bet for her, but for many of us, it’s an awesome solution for those in-between times when you are not ready to have your Japanese straightenings done to your roots yet – but don’t want to walk around with two inches of frizz, either. It is recommend for thick, frizzy, wavy, dyed gray hair, processed and damaged hair – but interestingly, does NOT work as well on virgin, undamaged hair!
Finally, a score in the hair-abuse column.
So the reason I am telling you about this is because I want to encourage you to NOT shy away from your favorite local salon. I have an awesome job that lets me try out every single big-name in the biz – and I do – and yet when it comes for my personal upkeep, this is where I’ve gone for ten years. They don’t have a flashy web site, or even accept credit cards – but they have better prices then their city counterparts, amazing service (seriously, never a single hair has broken off after a treatment there), and they are the coolest people ever. Word of mouth is a powerful process – which is why I maintain, if you have a friend that swears by a place that you may have not seen on TV or Cosmo, that doesn’t mean they aren’t awesome! Go try them out if you are a NY-er, they are right off the Avenue U stop on the Q train.
Especially if I send you.
If you aren’t a NYer, well, nevermind. But try the BKT, wherever you are!
