Single Shoulder Dresses

It was easy to see that the single shoulder dresswas alive, well, and right on trend at the People’s Choice Awards last night. Worn by Olivia Wilde, Ginnifer Goodwin, Neicy Nash, Mary J. Blige, Taraji P. Henson, and a very pregnant Jenna Elfman, the dress was showcased in a variety of lengths and colors.

This trend looks best when it involves some draping and not a lot of extra bells and whistles. Sometimes it appears almost like an afterthought, a single strap that looks like it was tacked on or it’s combined with another trend, like Mary J. Blige’s epaulet. 20100106_zaf_l89_167.jpg

Keep it simple and the look is very feminine and flattering. Take that thing off Blige’s shoulder and her dress would have looked perfect – the color was lovely.

Ginnifer Goodwin’s dress had a huge flower on the shoulder strap. The dress would have looked better with no strap and a smaller flower (see Olivia Wilde’s dress), attached to the bodice. Or just skip the bow altogether. Keep it single, flowy.

Jenna Elfman’s dress had a grecian-sort-of wrapped look. I love that look – Neicy Nash did the same thing. It’s a way to show some skin, but still keep a larger bosom well-supported. Watch for this trend to continue through the Spring.
