I finally saw “Precious.” Although I think the film paled in comparison to Sapphire’s brilliant-but-brutal novel Push, newcomer Gabourey Sidibe did an amazing job as the troubled title character. The scenes between Gabourey and Mo’Nique, who portrayed Precious’ viscously abusive mother, were particularly heartbreaking.
Unlike her character, Gabourey is a confident, bubbly, and well-spoken young woman. Sandra Bullock bested her for the Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Drama. The competition is just as stiff for tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards; but let’s see if the Brooklyn native can beat out Sandy (“The Blind Side”) and Meryl Streep (“Julie & Julia”) .
And hopefully the weather will be better than it was for the Golden Globes, where Gabourey’s pretty green gown got wet on the red carpet. If I were a celeb, I’d keep an extra dress on standby just in case Mother Nature decides to rain on my parade.
