Fashion 101: How to Wear a Spring Scarf

“A scarf changes everything,” remarked my friend Ashley the other day. “You can add a scarf to an outfit you’ve worn a million times, and suddenly it’s like new.”

I considered this for a moment. Until now, I’ve always been in the scarves-are-meant-for-warmth camp and the idea of wearing a silk scarf in the spring has always seemed like a bit too much work. I mean, aren’t we supposed to be shedding layers? But I must mention that Ashley is not only my sage fashion-advice buddy, but a scarf designer, of the eponymous Ashley Jeanne. Yet, on this particular afternoon, she wasn’t pitching me or giving me the hard sell, she was just stating a fact. Scarves are the ultimate accessory. And looking at her, I knew she was right. She was wearing ripped jeans, a gray t-shirt with one neatly tied silk scarf tied around her neck. She was by far the most elegant woman in the room. Okay, so there were just the two of us in the room, but still. She looked amazing.

So I made her to teach me. Here is what I learned: 3 easy and effective ways to tie a spring scarf. These styles, she explained, have their roots in basic French technique, but with some modifications. “Always modify,” she advised. “Just play around with it. Start with some technique and see what you can do to make it your own. There are many ways to wear a scarf.”
