As beauty pageants continue to evolve in order to recapture their dwindling audiences, Miss England is making a firm stance: they’ve eliminated the show’s swimsuit portion in favor of sportswear. Last year’s Miss England, Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge (pictured at left), was reportedly a driving force behind the change. “In a world of size zero models it’s not a particularly good image to give out to girls that you’ve got to be stick thin,” Hodge said. “I met girls who were all dieting and worrying about the bikini round and I just thought it’s not a good image for girls to have.”
The pageant celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. In November, Hodge will hand her crown over to the new winner, who will go on to compete in the Miss World pageant.
