Poll: What’s a Legitimate Age Difference?

People.com reports that Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough are getting serious, which I guess for Seacrest means that he’s learned her last name. But am I the only one who thinks twice about the fact that he’s 35 and she’s 21? I mean, I know this is Hollywood and whathaveyou, so he’s probably really 49 and she’s probably really 16, and that there’s no sense of decorum ’round these parts, but that seems liek kind of a big age difference to me. When I was 21, I thought dudes over 30 were wicked fucking old. Now I just think that a guy that age dating a girl that young kind of sucks as a person.

Your thoughts?

There was a 24 year difference between my parents who were happily together for 42 years until my father passed away in 1998.

Really? I generally dated people in their 30s in my early 20s, though maybe in large part because so many 20 year old guys in New York were busy trying to get a career going and didn’t have much time for dating. Still, I found I really appreciated the fact that they had a bit more life experience built up than your average 20 year old dude.

I think it depends on what she’s doing and what he’s doing. I’m 21, and I’m in college. I wouldn’t date someone over 25 who wasn’t in college or graduate school because we’d be in totally different places. In the case of a 21-year-old woman who’s been independent and in the work force for a few years, I don’t think this is as bad.

I’ve found this to be a pretty good standard rule:

Creepiness Quotient= Age Divided by 2 Plus 7.

In this case, his age divided by two plus seven is 24 and a half. So that means it’s creepy for him to date anyone under that age. Therefore, it totally is creepy.

Thanks to Randall Munroe at http://www.xkcd.com for this great rule, aiding me in judging the relationships of others. http://www.xkcd.com/314 for the actual comic.

I don’t think that’s necessarily creepy, although it is interesting how an age difference that, were it between two normal people dating, would cause comment, is generally accepted/ignored in Hollywood. I remember when Hilary Duff was 16 and dating Joel Madden, who was 24. Nobody seemed to care. If I’d been dating a 24-year-old when I was sixteen, people would have said something.

Pretty sure it’s not real anyway so…

A 3-5 years age difference limit seems reasonable based on the fact that you should not have been old enough to change your love interests diapers when they used to wear them as a baby or toddler. Outside of that limit is just nasty.
