Lit Chick: Evaluating Female Mystery Writers

I love books. I’d pick reading a book over watching a TV show any day. When I was younger I read all the Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen Mystery Novels. Their slogan: We’ll solve any crime by dinner time. And I have to say that my favorite guilty-pleasure genre is mystery novels. Lilit wrote about reasons why she still loves Jessica Fletcher and I make no secret about my love for Harlan Coben and my devotion to Daniel Silva and John Grisham. But what about those female mystery writers? I’ve included some of my favorites below, feel free to add your own favorites in the comments. I’m always looking for new authors and novels to sink my teeth into!

Dorothy L Sayers. Her Peter Wimsey novels (especially the later ones, with Harriet Vane) are delicious, as well as being a wonderfully subtle interrogation of the British class system between the Wars. Also, Death really IS his middle name.

Kate Atkinson’s last three novels! She’s literary, but these three are definitely also mystery novels. She’s even cited Coben as someone who’s mystery writing she enjoys.
