It used to be that when I saw the name “Kardashian” pop up in my cable guide, I immediately skipped over it and pretended the whole thing had never happened. The Kardashians, with their whiny, nasal voices, their fame-whoring, and their abject lack of personality were simply too much to bear, even for me, a devout fan of anything reality.
But this weekend, I caved. There was NOTHING ELSE TO WATCH, and what was I going to do, read a book?! So I reluctantly clicked on “Kourtney and Khloe take Miami,” and let me be the first to tell you: I was surprised by what I saw.
By now we all know that Scott, Kourtney’s baby daddy, is a total douche. Like, capital D Douche, like you might see his picture instead of a feminine product if you looked up douche in the dictionary. As if it wasn’t bad enough that Scott was using his job at a club to go party at other clubs while Kourtney was home with the baby, this week, he got so pissed off that he punched a mirror. First of all, who does that? Are you stupid? People punch walls and not mirrors for a reason — it’s called glass. But anyway, second of all, not cool. Not cool when you don’t have a baby around; super not cool when you do have a baby around. Fortunately, Kourtney did the right thing and packed her bags, and I’m happy to report that she had Kim there with her, who served as my inspiration.
Kim Kardashian is well known for having done nothing to deserve her fame, and generally being a vapid moron. But when it came to Kourtney’s well-being, Kim was on top of her game. She was there with advice, relentlessly telling Kourtney that she cared about her too much to keep her mouth shut about how she felt about Scott, that her family was there for her no matter what, that what Scott was doing wasn’t fair or right — in other words, being an excellent support, friend and sister. And then when Kourtney finally saw Scott for what he is — a hard-partying liar!! — Kim didn’t hesitate to wake up at 4:00am to talk to Kourtney through the hurt.
Now, I understand that some people — myself included — see butting into someone’s relationship as generally overstepping bounds. And that might be true, for most friends and family. But the episode got me thinking that when it comes to the people you are most close to — sisters, BFF’s, whoever — maybe it’s not such a bad idea to speak your mind, especially when it comes from a place of love.
Anyway, so yes, there you have it — the Kardashians made me gooey and soft. But I mean, shit — it’s nice to know that people are being honest with you, and that your friends will have your back when the going gets tough. So I have a newfound respect for those Krazy K’s, particularly Kim. Despite all the drama, that mom must have done something right.
