Julianna Margulies Wins Coveted ‘First Oral Sex on Network TV’ Award

TV has long been a place to break new ground or talk about social issues. However, network TV has long been more staid than its cable counterparts. Think about it – True Blood gets away with all kinds of sexual acrobatics every week, but the characters on Lost couldn’t even call Jack an asshole. (And he really was an asshole a lot of the time, so it was warranted.) Now, network TV is about to break one taboo – depicting oral sex in a scene with Julianna Margulies and Chris Noth’s characters – and, apparently, it’ll be him going down on her. They won’t be showing any of the act, of course, but you’ll get a pretty clear sense of what’s going on. Is this an achievement in the fight against censorship, or just a way for a TV show to keep its name in the papers in advance of the lead actress’ Emmy campaign? Either way, considering what Law & Order: SVU is able to get away with every week, showing a hummer seems like nothing. It has long bothered me the way that sexual violence is a-OK on network television, but sex between two consenting adults who love each other is vilified. Blow away with your bad self, Julianna.

Correction: An earlier version of this post indicated that the scene would depict fellatio, not cunnilingus. Our bad!

It’s probably because there’s a perception that shows like SVU are depicting but not promoting the violence, while non-violent sexual behavior viewed creates a sense of approval and normalcy. But then again, media censorship has always been about the values, not the actual image on the screen.
