Handbag Porn…Or Handbag Turnoff?

Kate Spade has a new bag called Beantown Charlie, inspired by my hometown of Boston. And judging by the looks of it, what she’s done here is to walk the streets of Boston, take the one item that bombarded her eyeballs at every turn — the pea coat — and turn it into a bag.

So while I think this is a tiny, little bit clever and it makes me experience a small amount of nostalgia, I’m not sure why anyone outside of Boston would want it.

Oh, believe you me — this will fly off the racks on Newbury Street. This will be the “it” bag from Worcester to Cape Cod. Everyone will have this bag, and it will perfectly match their winter outerwear. In fact, it might match their winter outerwear a little too well, but that will be fine, because it’s Boston, and so fashion-wise, better safe than sorry.

But in California? No. In Iowa? Doubt it. Portland? Maybe, if Spade can somehow prove that no one else has figured out how cool the bag is or that it was made locally. Anyway, the bag is just so region-specific, rather than region-inspired, that it makes me think old Kate is getting just a bit too literal

I think it’s really cute, and I live in New Orleans. It would look great with jeans, which we all wear, year-round (that may be an indictment of our fashion sense, but gimme a break), and it makes us imagine what it would be like to live somewhere you get to actually go out in a winter coat for more than a few weeks.
