13-Year-Old Peruvian Girl Denied Abortion, Now Paralyzed

After being raped by a family friend, L.C., a 13-year-old Peruvian girl, found out she was pregnant. When she confronted her attacker, he denied that he could have caused the pregnancy. L.C. was so distraught that she tried to kill herself by jumping off the roof of a neighboring house.

Her suicide attempt didn’t work — instead, she lay on the ground until she was found and brought to a nearby hospital. But once doctors there found out she was pregnant, they refused to operate, “insisting that she wait until she gave birth first.”

L.C.’s family tried to persuade them to perform an abortion, and despite the fact that the Peruvian Medical Association would later agree that L.C.’s circumstances met the requirements for abortion under Peruvian law — that the woman would suffer “grave and permanent damage” to her health if she carried the pregnancy to term — the doctors still denied her the care she needed. Eventually, L.C. miscarried, but because her injuries had been unattended for so long, she’s now permanently paralyzed from the waist down, with little use of her arms and no control of her bowels.

The Center for Reproductive Rights has taken up her case. Watch this video, and share it, so her story is heard.

This is just so terribly upsetting. There is literally no way to express how sad I feel for this young woman. But it definitely makes me want to get involved in any way that I can. Thanks for giving us the links to do so.

Wow, that was worthwhile. Thank you, pro life movement, for ruining the lives of those around us all for the sake of a life that might have been.

I actually started to cry when I read this. What a waste of a young girls life because of a horrible crime. And then these doctors thinking that this “life” inside her (that she doesnt want) has more right than she does makes me sick. These kinds of things should not be happening in todays world.
