Do You Think Blake Lively Is Daisy Buchanan?

Because we don’t.

And yet, she’s out with Baz Luhrmann (who is directing the upcoming version of The Great Gatsby) and Leonardo DiCaprio (who is playing Jay Gatsby) and she’s being “strongly considered for the role of Daisy Buchanan.”

Oh, really? Really?

Look, I don’t hate Blake Lively for wandering around staring at people vacantly and thrusting her chest at them on every single episode of Gossip Girl. That’s Gossip Girl. The characters have to do something when they’re not teaching kids valuable lessons about how to form puns involving their own names (Chuck Bass-tard.) You can’t really judge anyone off of that.

But Blake Lively still strikes me as too accessible to personify the ever elusive American dream.

Perhaps because I still think of Daisy Buchanan as a thing with feathers that doesn’t so much perch in the soul as flutters delicately, just out of reach. To me, Blake Lively doesn’t convey “delicate bird fluttering out of reach”.  Blake Lively conveys “labradoodle”.  She reminds me of that girl in every high school who guys were in love with. You remember that girl? She smoked pot and had a completely monotone voice and listened to Dylan and looked great in maxi-dresses. That girl seemed gorgeous and free spirited but also totally accessible to  guys who thought of themselves as sensitive and artistic.

Blake Lively plays that girl perfectly (I don’t know if it’s just a role, maybe in her private life she like to wear cardigans and make sharp, snappy banter about Schopenhauer). That makes her a great Serena van der Woodsen. And it made her really great in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.

And it will make her a godawful Daisy Buchanan.

Basically, I’m pushing for January Jones.

I still think Mia Farrow was a perfect Daisy. Next in line, would be me… not Blake.

I agree. Blake Lively is my Jessie Henderson and she was just..everybody was in love with her because she was accessible to everybody (while also being gorgeous and cool). January Jones would be good, but she comes off as way less than clever & witty. I vote:

Anne Hathaway: watch her in Alice & Wonderland and tell me she’s not a totally captivating swan creature you can only marvel at from afar.
Natalie Portman: can do accessible, but also can do aloof and airy like a pro.
Scar Jo: her lack of acting skills combined with her knockout beauty combine well to make her seem distant and mysterious.

I never thought Mia Farrow was Daisy, personally – I thought of Daisy as beautiful, seductive, and just accessible enough to be a tease. A modern Lotte, from Goethe, more or less. Mia Farrow, apart from being a blonde soprano (Daisy in the book is described as being dark-haired and a contralto), wasn’t really appealing enough. I think it’s important for people to fall a bit in love with Daisy before the reality of her humanity hits them and breaks up the romantic ideal. I wouldn’t pick Blake Lively, but I don’t think she’d necessarily be a terrible choice.

No mere PERSON can be Daisy. She so much more than a person–and so much less.

      She would be HORRIBLE!

Natalie Portman would be almost perfect.

NOOO. Am I the only one who saw Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and thought, “My god that girl who plays Bridget can’t act!”? She was was supposed to have a crush on her soccer coach and showed zero emotion. I don’t know if I’d be able to see The Great Gatsby with Blake Lively as Daisy. She’s not a tease. She’s stone. A stone that talks through her teeth. No hard feelings.

Blake Lively makes me want to cut babies. I hate her. And I love January Jones as Betty, but I am afraid she is a one-note actress and would play Daisy as Betty Draper and that’s just a little too cold for Daisy. I just thought Jessica Biel maybe? that could be off, but I can see her doing it.

i’m disappointed. i don’t think blake lively can pull off daisy. she doesn’t have the range, potential, and talent to play this kind of role. she better stick to teeny shows like gossip girls, where she’s only good at. i mean, where her acting fits.
