Science News: ‘Anorexia Is Not a Good Contraceptive’

According to a new study, women who have anorexia are more likely to wind up with an unplanned pregnancy. Why? It has to do with a lot of factors, chiefly the way that women with eating disorders often also have irregular and inconsistent menstrual cycles, making it hard to keep track of their fertile days. Also, some women with eating disorders might assume that their health makes it impossible for them to get pregnant. Because anorexics’ pregnancies are more likely to be unplanned, a higher percentage of women who have or had the disease are more likely to have gotten an abortion.

“Anorexia is not a good contraceptive,” said Dr. Cynthia M. Bulik, a professor at the University of North Carolina, who led the study. I guess forgetting to eat can’t be a substitute for forgetting the Pill, huh?
