Beautyism: Jolie Laide

Here are TheGloss we try to help you define terms so that you can read fashion magazines effectively.

Today’s term: Jolie Laide.

It’s technically defined as “pretty ugly” But not like “ha-ha, you’re pretty, pretty ugly” because we’re not in third grade anymore (thank God). It means a woman who is wonderful to look at, though not conventionally pretty. I think some pictures are going to be worth 1000 words, so here are some Jolie Laide Ladies.

I’ve always thought of myself as a woman who is “striking” to look at, but not necessarily “pretty”. Now I know there is a name for it!
There also is a fun song called They’re Everywhere by Izza Kizza with reference to this term. I always wondered what it meant!
Thanks for this interesting view of beauty.

Molly Ringwald looks fairly “conventionally attractive” to me.

You should do a follow-up post with sexy-ugly dudes!
