When Not to Break Up: When Your Kid Is Born

Basketball player Steve Nash, whom I have only heard of because I a) work with Canadians and b) he’s mentioned in a Nelly Furtado song, and his wife announced their split today. While it’s nothing unusual for a celebrity to get a divorce, there is one particularly noteworthy about this particular breakup announcement: it came as the P.S. in Nash and wife Alejandra’s press release about the birth of their son. In a statement to the press, Nash wrote:

I am very thankful and excited that we have a new son, Matteo Nash. Alejandra and the baby are doing fine. But this is a bittersweet moment for my wife and I; after five years, we are now in the process of dissolving our marriage. While we have lived separately for the past several months, we remain firmly committed to raising our children in the most positive, nurturing way possible.

Maybe he wants to pay his publicist less and thought he could combine two press releases into one here. And hey, sometimes marriages just don’t work out, even when children are involved. But for the sake of said child, who will someday be old enough to read the articles about Mom & Dad’s divorce, would it have killed you to wait a week?
