Birth Control You Can Rub On Your Whole Body

I mean, I think the headline pretty much says it all. The BBC reported recently that a new contraceptive gel called Nestorone is being tested, and it looks to be as effective as the pill but offers women who really, really love lotion another option:

“The gel can be applied to the abdomen, thighs, arms or shoulders and is quickly absorbed, with no residue.”

OK — let me get this out of the way. I am not against more options. More options are great, and so this is great.

But can I imagine feeling comfortable rubbing gel infused with birth control all over my body? No. I cannot. Can you?

Wow, this actually seems pretty cool. I’d use this if it were on the market

I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable slathering birth control all over my body, but the interesting thing for in the linked article was that it appears to be safe for breastfeeding mothers–that’s great.

It seems like the dosage would be difficult to control. How do you know you’ve put on exactly the right amount? Is there a certain amount of time you’d have to wait to absorb it before you get in the shower, pool, etc.?

I’m guessing it comes in pre-measured doses like my dog’s heartworm preventative does. It still just seems a little too wacky.

This seems like a recipe for inaccurate dosage and general misuse.

Hm. It’s an interesting idea. Not sure I’d give it a go, but then, I don’t even wake up to my pill alarm anymore. I can apparently open blister packs in my sleep. Why risk losing that sort of talent?

But seriously, always good to have more options and definitely a creative idea.
