Who Should Play Mary Todd Lincoln?

It has just been announced that Daniel Day-Lewis is going to play Abraham Lincoln in an upcoming biopic. This leads, of course, to a way more interesting question: who is going to play his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln? While Jackie O is more famous, Mary had her own incredible biography. Desired by both Lincoln and his eventual opponent for the presidency, Steven A. Douglas, she totally made the right call. Three of her four kids and her husband died during her lifetime, got criticized for buying new furniture and decorations for the White House while the country was at war, and probably suffered from manic depression. In other words, it’s a very meaty role for an actress. But who could play her? A few suggestions:

  • Rachel Weisz: She definitely has the acting chops, but would she be willing to ugly up for the role?
  • Natalie Portman: She’s probably too young for the role, but the girl wants an Oscar and this part is total award bait.
  • Meryl Streep: Because she can do anything, obviously.
  • Marcia Gay Harden: She’s got the depth and the range, and Pollock showed she can play an unhappy, troubled wife.
  • Jeanne Tripplehorn: She already has experience playing a First Lady in Grey Gardens. Plus, Mary Todd Lincoln has some similiarities with Tripplehorn’s Big Love character. Once the show ends, she’ll need something to do.

An interesting question, however my query is if Harriet Lane, who is pictured above, is in the running. Miss Lane served as official White House hostess for her uncle, President James Buchanan. The image is not Mary Lincoln.

Why is there a picture of Harriet B. Lane on this article- it shows the photo as Mary Lincoln in the search engines.

I have to agree with the other comments that this is not a photograph of Mary Todd Lincoln. Out of respect to her, wouldn’t it make sense to replace it if this article is still posting?
