Video: ‘Rent’ Star Daphne Rubin-Vega Supports Marriage Equality

Original Rent castmember Daphne Rubin-Vega (she played Mimi but was inexplicably replaced by Rosario Dawson in the film version) is joining other New York-based celebrities who are speaking out in favor of the Empire state allowing gay marriage. Julianne Moore and Kevin Bacon have both done ads, but Rubin-Vega’s is the first one in Spanish.

Daphne Rubin-Vega was replaced in the movie adaptation of Rent because she was pregnant during filming, and you can’t have a pregnant Mimi. Why they could not schedule around her or even if she wanted them to, I don’t know.

Oh, that’s helpful. Thanks. Although it still doesn’t explain the Joanne recasting.

Yeah, that one I, unfortunately can’t help you with. I did actually see the film Joanne play Joanne on Broadway in the last year of it’s run, and she did a pretty good job, but I do wish the original Joanne had made the film.

Also, did you hear that they are bringing back Rent in an Off-Broadway production? I’m still having mixed feelings.

      Oh and, yay marriage equality!
