10 Words I Would Like to Ban Forever

I spend a lot of time reading and writing. Sometimes I find wonderful authors whose use of language makes me see the world in new ways, and sometimes I find words that make me twitch and consider learning Portuguese. Here are the ten I hate the most:

  • Canoodling
  • Galpal
  • Funnyman/Funnylady
  • Preggers
  • Boytoy
  • Cardi
  • Would of (it’s would’ve!)
  • Cankles
  • On-trend
  • Moist

What words would you like to scrub from the dictionary forever?

Use of “would of” and “should of” bothers me immensely as well…

  • Eileen

“Fashionista.” I hate hate hate that word. Also, adding “-gate” to the end of a word to give it a “scandal” name. Another one: “va-jay-jay.” That one might be number one, actually – it’s so stupid and childish.

  • marissa

So many things…pit stop, touch base, lover, and any cutesy name for vagina, including vajayjay. Most of all, I hate when people add unnecessary indirect objects. For example, “I love me some candy canes!!”

  • Catherine

All of the above (especially touch base-ugh!) and Nor’easter. I can’t explain it; it just drives me crazy.

  • Marvy

I am totally on board with moist, I hate that word!!!!! I also CANNOT stand the word panties, that makes me cringe!!! Just use the term women’s underwear people!!! People’s misuse of irony also drives me but that is a story for another day…

    • Aj

You took the words write out of my mouth.

    • Ann Thropic

In addition to ‘moist’ and ‘panties’, I hate the word ‘tampon’, all its abbreviations (tamps, tampys, etc), and everything else they stand for. UGH!

  • Lorraine

I’m so thankful that I’ve found kindred spirits that hate these words, too! I also hate the misuse of the word “seen” — there is an entire word tense that people in my region get wrong. Here’s an example I heard just this morning: “I seen in the paper that my favorite store is having a sale.” It actually makes me want to get violent.

  • elisa

Can “Whatever”be added to this list?

  • Neda

People say ‘Would of” ?Isn’t it “Would Have” ???

  • k.

    i hate the word chunk/chunking/chunked/chunky

  • Candy

All of those plus “EPIC” and “FAIL” have gotta go
