In Justify Your Designs new designers display their favorite piece, and explain why you need it in your closet. Today, we’re checking in with Alexandra Owen who is showing her take on a little black dress.
Explain to me why I need this item in my closet:
Every woman should have a classic “Little Black Dress” in her closet. The versatility of this particular design makes it work for both day and evening, worn as a cowl neck or halter style. It comes with a matching long-sleeved top underneath for coverage. Maximum value for your investment.
It looks a lot like another black dress which I already have. Why is yours so much better?:
In addition to the multiple ways in which you can style the piece, I crafted it in viscose jersey which is machine washable. No dry cleaning bills, and makes it a dream for traveling because it will stay crease-free.
Perhaps you are a charlatan. What’s your background and qualifications?:
No charlatans here! I sketch each look and create my own patterns. I am a graduate of Massey University where I studied Fashion Design. My first collection was stocked next to Lanvin, Comme des Garcons, Ann Demeulemeester. I have had the label for 6 years now, and have grown from being a young breakthrough label into opening high-end flagship retail here in New Zealand -all by the age of 28. In the last year we have travelled to NY during fashion week and shown to the biggest magazines and retailers in the world including Elle, Vogue, The New York Times and Bergdorf Goodman.
Will it look as good if I’m a size 14 as it will if I’m a size 2? Be honest.:
This dress actually comes as one-size-fits-all. And it does. I sold one to a size 16+ customer last month for an important event, which she wore with pearls and looked like a knockout.
Will I have to live off Ramen noodles for a month to afford it?:
The dress is from our diffusion line called Little Black Dress, and is a manageable $550. And since you can throw it in the washing machine you save on dry cleaning, as well.
Will my relatives in rural Iowa think I’m a freak if I show up to our family reunion in this?:
This dress is far too elegant to be considered freaky!
