Look of the Day: Michelle Obama’s Alexander McQueen Grand Slam

Michelle Obama wore a stunning red silk organza dress streaked with abstract inky black petals to the state dinner for President Hu Jintao of China.

The dress–designed by Alexander McQueen’s successor Sarah Burton–came from the house’s most recent resort collection and originally looked like this:

But since Mrs. Obama knows what she likes and what suits her, she had the sleeves taken off. This is just a phenomenal look for her: the color is breathtaking (plus, an unmistakable nod to China) and the fit is beautiful. She knocked it out of the park.

I have been looking at pictures of this dress for the past two days and the only thing I can think is, “Why won’t she pull up the strap?” It looks stupid to have one strap falling off and the other perfectly placed. Totally don’t care if that’s what it’s supposed to look like.

Thanks! Me too. The fabric is lovely and perfect for her coloring, but that strap looks stupid. I’m not crazy about the skirt – she has a much nicer figure than the dress gives her credit for – but if she’d just fix the strap, it would be about ten times better.
