Helena Bonham Carter Defends Her Right To Dress Like a Crazy Person

Helena Bonham Carter took a ton of flack for her mismatched shoes and Vivienne Westwood dress at the Golden Globes (pictured) from most of the fashion press and some disgruntled bloggers, including this one. But she doesn’t seem to give a damn and will continue dressing like a wacko. She tells People:

“Sometimes I get it right and I sometimes I get it wrong. But fashion is all about having fun. I think fashion has been hijacked by the fashion industry creating rules on what one should wear and I feel like breaking the mold and seeing that the world won’t crumble.”

I couldn’t agree with her more! I’m all for actresses taking fashion risks and looking like glamorous nutjobs, I even loved Uma Thurman’s infamously hideous Lacroix at the 2004 Oscars.  I want Helena to keep dressing the way she does for every red carpet event and I hated the idea of giving her Golden Globes look a Worst Dressed mantle… because I applaud her originality, weirdness, and daring. I would certainly never dock her points for dressing like the eccentric she seems to be, it’s just that I just thought the Westwood dress was fucking ugly. And ill-fitting. Simple as that.

Fortunately, she doesn’t care.

I hated the dress, but I thought she looked really beautiful. Her skin is fantastic. Maybe the ugly dress set off her beautiful face? In that case, kind of a smart move.

I LOVE the shoes. I wish I’d thought of it (I do mismatched earrings) but I will now happily steal it.

i love her outfit :)! Yes, even the dress; I think it’s quite pretty in its own way. Her outfit and hair crazy curly hair just seems to give you some insight into her personality, and it fits, so she wears it :). Can’t wait to see her new crazy outfit ^-^!

The shoes aren’t mismatched. They’re the same shoe in different colors.

If she could find a dress that the RIGHT side has more red color to match with her LEFT red shoe, her outfit will be harmonious and she could create a fashion trend.

did no one notice that she wore the shoes according to port and starboard convention on a boat?
    i think it’s awesome
i have always wanted a pair of shoes i could do that with

How can shoes be worn according to port and starboard convention?

    • john

because, on a boat, the red light always goes on the left hand side of the boat showing port side, and the green light always goes on the right side showing starboard side.
That way you can see if a boat is approaching you or not in times when you can only see the lights.
and here she has worn the shoes red on left, and green on right.
      like a boat

Of course you hated the dress, it’s a Westwood (draw your own conclusion). Right about the ‘port ‘n’ starboard’ shoes, ‘though I’m surprised it’s taken so long for anyone else to do it; I’ve been wearing ‘odd’ trainers and tennis shoes for more than 20 years. Keep ignoring the numb-nuts, lady.
