Do You Have A Signature Nail Polish Shade?

I still remember sitting in my high school cafeteria and hearing some girl – you know the kind of girl – remark on how ballet slipper pink nail polish was the only acceptable shade of nail polish. “It’s the only thing I’d ever wear” she told her friend and then she paused for a second and remarked “because everything else is tacky.” Well, that explained it! Her friend kind of nodded. And then someone else said that she only painted her nails red and only on  special occasions, and she had a special shade she used. I don’t remember what. Jungle red, probably.

Then I looked away and continued biting my nails while reading Bartleby the Scrivener or something, idly spitting nail shavings in the general direction of that well manicured table.

That was a while ago, and I still bite my nails off every time I’m stressed. Which is every single day. So I prefer not to have a manicure and endure questions from the manicurist about why I bite my nails. Honestly, I keep hoping someone will bring kid gloves back because it’s my only shot at getting something to stop me from gnawing fitfully on my hands.

But!

If I were to ever stop trying to ingest my own strength via eating my nails, I’m totally going to rock a signature nail polish shade. I’m thinking any of those green shades that make people look like a dying alien. But I am open to suggestions. Do you have a shade?

Yeah, champagne toast by Sally Hansen (very ballet-slippers-esque, but with shimmer). I like it because it doesn’t stand out too much and goes with everything. But I wear other colors too sometimes.

  • Amy

I have two shades I alternate: OPI’s Cajun Shrimp and My Chihuahua Bites. They’re both sort of orange-y.

My nails (after my shoes !) are certainly one of my signature feature, according to my friends. My nails make people talk, either if they’re Electric Blue or Barbie Pink with sparkles…

  • Taffy

I own around 400 bottles of nail polish and write a polish blog, so I don’t have a signature shade. But if you are looking at green polish, I’ve really liked Zoya’s Shawn, kind of a leaf green, Nars’ Zulu which is a deep & dark green and OPI’s Electric Eel if you are looking for something, lighter and more shimmery.

  • Fierce&Cute

i’ve got about 350 bottles of polishes and do wear pretty much every color ever created.

Something dark, always. Really into OPI’s Luxedo right now.

..I was inspired to a great green nail polish hunt after seeing Sigourney Weaver with alien green nails in Alien: Resurrection. It was a considerable lightning up from years of black nail polish, even if it was a dying alien shade:-)

I pretty much only wear blues, greens (My favorite is a green named “Toad”) & purples. Once in a while I’ll wear an orange polish, but it’s hard to find a good one.

Is it “Toad” from the Revlon Street Wear line or something different?

Most of the time my toenails are either a really pale sparkly pink or deep red [yeah I know that makes me sound super boring; red is pretty much the only non-neutral I wear too]. Occasionally really pale sparkly purple or dark purple or dark blue, if I’m feeling less conventional. It mostly hinges on what mood I’m in when I paint them. But I really enjoy painting my toenails; I’m kind of neurotic so it relaxes me, and I do a crazy thorough job with the base and topcoat so it usually doesn’t start to chip until it’s already grown a gap at the cuticle. I tried painting my fingernails a couple times when I was bored but it never took; I used to play violin and now I work on cars so it stayed decent-looking about two minutes. It’s a losing battle. Plus if I’m using a bolder color it’s a lot easier to hide toes than fingers. :)

I’m partial to Teenage Marilyn Manson Fan Black, a color name which sadly does not exist. YET.

I’m obsessed with nail polish… I have hundreds of bottles in any color imaginable. But I think if I was going to have a signature, I’d go with You Don’t Know Jacques by OPI. It’s a go-with-anything dark taupe.

  • Rosie

Whatever color matches my aura that day.

  • Michele

i have a few signature shades. do you lilac it by opi, black, white, dark taupe. i dont do all white anymore because it doesnt last very long. i am a big fan on blues and purples though, so i have many shades of those two.

OPI’s Mrs. O’Leary’s BBQ used to be my favorite, but it’s been bumped out of the top spot by William Tell Me About OPI. I love nail polish, and have dozens of bottles, but I most often revert to one of those two, especially during the fall and winter.

  • Rosebud

I am a sucker for OPI’s names of nail polish. You put a snappy name on a polish and I will wear it. Ultimate favorite which is a bright red… “I’m not really a waitress.”
