Poll: Is This Sexy?

We just read that “The Hunger Games” are looking to cast teenagers who are “underfed.” I can hear the rustle of stage parents pulling away their daughter’s egg-white omelets as we speak!

I imagine this is keeping with the plot of the book (I haven’t read it, assuming it’s about hunger, gaming) but I think it raises some interesting issues about body types we find attractive and want to look at. Certainly throughout most of history “underfed” would be synonymous with “famine, going to die soon” – but these days I can’t imagine a major motion picture looking for young, sexy overfed people. And to be totally honest, if someone offered me a pill that would mean I would remain an effortless size zero forever, I’d probably chomp their hand off so I could ingest it before they had a chance to take it away (do I get feminist points for feeling bad about this? A few, maybe?)

Do you find underfed physiques attractive? Out of the following women, which one would you most like to look like?

Sorry! This poll is now closed.

I’ll take a Serena physique and her serve while I’m at it. I have seen her in person, she looks like the Goddess of War or something, it’s literally stunning.

  • Lauren

I’m reading The Hunger Games series now. I’m on the second one. It’s really good and I recommend it. And yes, everyone is quite hungry except the rich people….

I am really excited for the movies but after reading this post I do feel really badly about how many people will starve themselves for roles in this movie. Seems really sad…

  • katie

Im going with the VS model since I luckly have the great little body shape naturally but no boobs.. though VS bras do make it seem truthful haha

  • oja

The girl in the picture looks like an alien.
I don’t get whats supposed to be so hot about women who are so thin that they look ill. They don’t look warm or inviting, they just look bony and brittle.

  • Kelly

I’d like to look like myself thankyouverymuch.

  • ash

i like myself as i am… and the photo of the model is old and at a really weird angle, she is actually one of the faces of Victorias Secret Pink now

  • Randi

I’d like to look pretty much the way I do now, just a maybe a little healthier. That model needs a steak.

  • Ms. Pants

It’s really hard not to pick the cannibal option, you know? Because it’s just full of win. That said, I’m pretty sure I was born in the wrong centry, because I like looking like I eat regularly. That model pictured in the terrible mauve bikini looks like a prisoner of a war camp got a snooki tan.

  • mdubb

simple as this: gotta have t and a, and a stomach that doesn’t growl nor taunt me with muffins i can’t squeeze successfully and attractively into skinny jeans, and i’m golden.

  • ellie

I think reese witherspoon has a great figure

  • Amanda

Did anyone notice the large amount of body hair on that model? Lots of anorexics grow extra body hair as a coping mechanism for lack of body fat. Yuck!

  • kat

lol, this girl is a VS model. she has put on a lot of weight since that picture. it’s really old.

if she had bigger boobs i can guarantee that most people would say she’s hot.

  • cnm

I have no problem with thinness. What I dislike is the look of frailness.

  • Ashley Cardiff
  • jane

you raise an interesting question, but maybe you should find out what the hunger games is actually about. it would explain the casting call.

  • Carly

Can’t we all just appreciate a wide variety of body types? I don’t think there is any need to make cruel comments about anybody’s weight. I am at least as thin as that model and if I had just a drop less of the amount of self esteem that I have now, I would be feeling pretty terrible about myself after reading some of these comments.

  • Kait

I love the look of Salma Hayek/Christina Hendricks, which is convenient because I have a major hourglass figure going on and would never ever EVER trade it…

except if I could have a role in the Hunger Games. then I might. because those books are BOMB.

  • Paige

Sexy is when you can grab a womans ass and get a handful, and maybe her skin will show some dimples and cellulite if you squeeze it! Not when you grab and break the bitches bones! Wtf is this? She looks like a Holocaust corpse. Its terrible.

    • Ms. Pants

I was afraid to say “Holocaust” but it’s certainly what I thought.

  • Paige

Of course I understand if she is naturally this small because I am very small myself. But there is a difference in having an unnaturally high metaabolism or a thyroid problem, and starving yourself to look like a model. Its just ridiculous

  • Laura

I want to look like a healthy version of myself. I’m naturally bigger with curves. Some women are thinner with or without curves. Some are bigger with straighter figures. They should all continue to be their natural and healthy selves and not talk each other down.

  • Caroline

As I’m in recovery from a fairly nasty eating disorder, I can say that I’d really rather just look healthy than anything else. I think most people are naturally a fairly modest size (about a UK 12) unless they are eating in an unhealthy manner. Sure, I used to be a lot bigger (a UK 16) but I realise looking back on that time I actually ate far larger portions and took far less exercise than was good for me.

If I could pick a body out of a book to look like it would probably be a curvy UK size 12, so not exactly starving, but not exactly big, with a fairly small waist and fairly curvy boobs.

  • Leigh

Just FYI – in the book The Hunger Games, a large percentage of the population of the “district” the main character is from is underfed. The girl has to hunt for food to feed her family because the district is so poor. There should be scenes with large crowds of kids who look malnurished. Not that the article doesn’t have good points, but the casting call would be true to the book.

  • Chelsea

    Oh my.
    Firstly… I don’t know anyone who’d find that sexy.
Secondly, I want to look like myself, only about 25 lbs lighter. Or… you know, with my thighs slimmed down. That’d be nice lol

  • Goldie

Yes, the casting call description IS in keeping with the character’s description in the book, but NO it doesn’t raise interesting questions about what body types we find attractive. The model in the picture raises those questions, and according to another commenter, that picture is really old.

The protagonist of The Hunger Games IS underfed and her body “type” is not glorified or sexualized in any way.

So um, on to your other points…. thinness is overrated in our culture and this is damaging to young women. Thanks for the reminder.

I’d like to look…. like myself. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Cabaret Voltaire

    No.
    That is nasty.
    And her face is crude.

  • HQ

Go read the books before you write a article criticizing their specifics with ignorance.

  • Blue

Horrible way to frame the poll – Who do I want to look like? The healthiest ME I can be!! I work hard to workout and eat well and I try to take care of myself. The photo does not look healthy to me but none of the option would ever reflect my reality because I am short…and short women, no matter how fit or gorgeous, are never models. Christina Hendricks is 5’8 so while not a model, no matter how my body looked, it would never resemble her in proportion.

  • Cristina Cole from www.lipshticks.wordpress.com

Casting ‘teenagers who are underfed’ would stay true to the character of the novel. As for this picture, no I don’t thin it’s sexy at all – ribs showing, hip bones poping out, it’s scary. As for the poll, I chose Christina Hendricks, I think curves are sexy. I love my curves. Great post! Love the mention of stage parents pulling away their daughter’s egg-white omletes.

  • B

I’d shoot for Adriana Lima because it’s a bit more realistic for me. I don’t quite have the hips and booty for an hourglass, but I have a big bust and slender limbs.

  • megan

She looks too severe. Like, maybe if her hair wasn’t slicked back like that because that’s not how it looks then you get out of the water, and if she had way less makeup on.
Then she’d look like she was happy on the beach! Which is always beautiful.
