What Quote Would You Want Tattooed On You?

I’m really liking the presentation of this quote from Augusten Burrough’s “Magical Thinking” but I’m not sure I’d pick that quote, myself. I’d probably pick “Sorry my life is more bitchin’ than yours. I planned it that way” by Charlie Sheen, but that’s why I don’t get tattoos. Because I make terrible decisions. What quote would you want?

I have a qupte tattoo, in the same placement as pictured above…. “Que Sera, Sera What will be, will be”….. not only because it’s a nice life-mesage, but also because my mom used to sing me the song and it has sentimental value.
I think the key, as with all tattoos, is to get something timeless and not based in pop culture, which changes by the week.

Too bad you got the lyric wrong, that must be embarrassing.

I have an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote from The Crack-Up on my wrist… keeps me sane, well, relatively speaking.

I’ve always wanted to get a quote from an Ani Difranco song: In this life we are given a birth and a death and all I want is some say in between

I have the last line of The Great Gatsby on me – “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” I wasn’t the biggest fan of the book up until the last line, and I just thought it was so poetic and meaningful that I knew right away that was the quote I wanted on me. I’m thinking of getting another quote tattoo, because apparently I want to be a walking book, and I’m thinking either, “I recognize only one duty and that is to love,” (Albert Camus) or “If there is no love in the world, we will make a new world,” (Jonathan Safron Foer – Everything is Illuminated). Haven’t decided or saved up the money yet, so I can delay that decision a while longer.

I’m planning on getting ‘Keep passing the open windows’, but have yet to fully settle on placement/format/etc; I feel like unless they’re really well done quotes can come off kind of trite even if they’re meaningful. And I have an indirect quote already: two lines of music [melody and harmony parts] that go with the lyrics ‘At least I’m breathing / At least I’m alive’. But since it’s only the notation almost no one know the relevance beyond the fact that I like music [also true].

I have just one word (love) tattooed on me. I like a single word better than a full quote (personally) because it is easier for it to mean different things to me at different times in my life. And because I tend to like long quotes that would take up too much real estate.

I have two quotes: the first is in white ink, scrolled across the back of my neck at my hairline and is a Neko Case lyric: ‘Vengeance Built Me Hastily’ as a reminder if someone is close enough to see it, they’re close enough to know better than to try to cross me.

I then have a second one in the same place as pictured above and it’s a line of poetry from Frank O’Hara:
Stars are out and there is sea
      enough beneath the glistening earth
to bear me toward the future
which is not so dark. I see.

One of my favorites would have to be, “Never mind now in your heart how much is owed”, which is from a Jeff Buckley song. To me, it’s about giving your heart and love to others without the expectation of receiving anything in return.

I’ve got tattoos, but no quotes. But I used to be on a dating site and a guy had a picture of a tattoo that he had, and one of the words was spelled wrong… He was cute, but I couldn’t bring myself to reply to his “wink” because of the mis-spelling that was permanently inked on him. :-\

      My sister and I got
“Whether it fades out or crashes away, every song ends. Is that any reason not to enjoy the music?”
I love it. But I will give you one hint if you get a quote. Make sure it’s small, or that you’re ok with repeating it a million times when people ask what it is.

I have always wanted the lyric “beyond and to all time I stand” from the AFI song Midnight Sun. To me it means that whatever happens in my life, I’ll make it through. Too bad my husband hates tattoos…I knew I should have gotten it done before I got married!

“He was a part of my dream of course, but then I was a part of his dream, too” from Through the Looking Glass. It’s always been one of my favorites & I have nothing but happy memories of that story from my childhood. It makes me smile every time I hear it.

“When you really love something, then it loves you back, in whatever way it has to love.” – Phineas from A Separate Peace

      or perhaps

“Teach us, good Lord, to give and not to count the cost.” – St. Ignatius of Loyola

And I know a guy who has “Triumph” tattooed on one arm and “Disaster” tattooed on the other, from the Rudyard Kipling poem. And another guy who woke up from one drunken night with the word “Veritas” in huge letters on his right forearm – we teased him freshman year that he should have gone to Harvard.

But the only thing I’ve ever seriously contemplated getting tattooed on me is a treble clef.
