Tom Ford: A Gentleman ‘Has to Work,’ Flip-Flops Are ‘Never Appropriate’

Tom Ford is always killing it. He’s about to be profiled in AnOther by its editor, Jefferson Hack. As a teaser, the magazine’s website has blessed us with Ford’s 5 Commandments for gentlemen. They are awesome, but they are also just kind of reasonable.

1. You should put on the best version of yourself when you go out in the world because that is a show of respect to the other people around you.

2. A gentleman today has to work. People who do not work are so boring and are usually bored. You have to be passionate, you have to be engaged and you have to be contributing to the world.

3. Manners are very important and actually knowing when things are appropriate. I always open doors for women, I carry their coat, I make sure that they’re walking on the inside of the street. Stand up when people arrive at and leave the dinner table.

4. Don’t be pretentious or racist or sexist or judge people by their background.

5. A man should never wear shorts in the city. Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.

Basically Tom Ford doesn’t like bigoted slobs who are willingly unemployed and wear flip-flops. Team Ford, forevs.

I was catching up on Mad Men the other day and was wondering myself why gentlemen these days don’t stand when someone leaves/arrives at a table. Then I realized how that would embarass me if it suddenly started happening, but it sure seems gentlemanly on the show.

    The ultimate gentleman!

Maybe I’m just a jerk, but I feel that there has never been a flattering pair of shorts for men. They are just the most tragic popular pieces of clothing ever (sorry, Crocs). It’s about time someone said something about it.

Well, I am a jerk, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a man in shorts and thought, “I take him seriously.”

Men still open doors for girls though. My favourites are the older gentlemen who will literally hurry *around* you in order to open the door by the time you get there. They’re SO cute!

I’m not sure why these are really rules for men only. It’s hard to take women seriously when they are wearing shorts, or when I can see all of their toes at once. If I can see all of your feet, you look excessively casual, and weirdly vulnerable to falling objects. Gender has nothing to do with it.

“weirdly vulnerable to falling objects” is totally my quote of the day.

These are fridge material. Right next to the one-year-old’s crayon scribbles…Tom Ford.
