There’s a ‘Female Indiana Jones’

Mireya Mayor is on a boat

I’m torn about this article on Mireya Mayor, a National Geographic wildlife correspondent. On one hand, it’s exciting that Mayor, who’s called a female Indiana Jones for her work with dangerous animals and in unsafe terrain, is being recognized, but on the other hand, I feel a little like, yeah, a woman in the wilderness…let’s not be too surprised, shall we?

But I think what’s particularly intriguing about Mayor is her own insistence on not being pigeonholed. She writes on her website that she’s an NFL cheerleader turned explorer with a PhD (because…she is), and in a media culture that has a hard time wrapping it’s teeny tiny mind around a woman who is fearless, brave and attractive, it’s nice to see her choose to define herself.
