Balmain To Start Selling Clothes At A (Possibly) Rational Price Point

These cost $880.

It’s just been a month since the house of Balmain announced Olivier Rousteing as its new creative director (replacing Christophe Decarnin) and now they’ve made an even bigger move: the label is launching a diffusion line.

Named ‘Pierre Balmain’ – in honor of the label’s founder, who started the fashion house in 1945 – a spokesperson today confirmed that the new range “will be younger and designed by a new team.” The first collection, for the spring/summer 2012 season, will be designed in Italy by a separate creative team and cater for both men and women.

Perhaps the house is responding to criticism that the ready-to-wear collections feature prices that are flat-out offensive. In which case: cool. Thanks.

Then again, hopefully the launch of the new collection isn’t just an excuse to sell unremarkable ripped t-shirts for $700, as opposed to $1500.
