OH SNAP: Edie Falco Wonders Who The Hell Kim Kardashian Is

Many of us may wish that we didn’t know who Kim Kardashian is, and it seems that we’re in good company. When asked about reality TV in an interview with NYMag.com’s Vulture blog, actress Edie Falco delivered this zinger:

“…who the hell is Kim Kardashian? Like, who are these people and why are they famous and why are they advertising things and being asked their opinions about things?”

Snap. Falco’s larger point was that fame has become sort of an uncontrollable beast in our culture, that people want to be famous without really knowing what they’re getting themselves into and that we as a society are so hungry for celebrities that we’re willing to turn anybody into one; case in point, the Kardashians.

I’ll be honest; I try to avoid the Kardashians as well. Theirs is one of about three reality shows that I can’t stomach, alongside Bridezillas and…OK, maybe it’s one of two. At least most reality shows have a premise — deranged housewives from New Jersey, deranged housewives from Orange County, deranged housewives from New York, deranged chefs, etc. The Kardashians are among the only show with no discernible raison d’être whatsoever, except, perhaps, that Kim is hot. But to listen to that family whine at each other about nothing, nothing at all…it’s enough to make anyone question the nature of modern entertainment. At least until Jersey Shore comes back on.

Who doesn’t wonder who the heck those people are?! I’m sure anyone who watches the asks themselves why they’re watching at least once.
