Poll: Are You Sporty Enough To Be A Duchess?

When I think of the duties of royalty, I imagine a lot of hand-waving, coating your teeth with Vaseline so you can smile for hours on end, and knowing the right questions to ask of world leaders and dignitaries.

What I don’t always think about is how versed one has to be in high-society sporting activities. But while in Canada, Kate Middleton proved once again that it takes a whole lot of breeding to marry a prince, as she led a group of paddlers during a dragonboat race. What is a dragonboat race, you ask? I have no idea. Let’s see if we can find anything on the internet…

Yeah, it’s basically a boat race. Like crew. It originated in China over 2,000 years ago, and got its name from the decorative adornments often featuring dragons at the front and back of the boats. Canada, it appears, embraced the event in the 1980′s, and has since been home to some of the largest dragonboat festivals outside of Asia.

OK! So now that you know about dragonboat racing, what do you think:

Sorry! This poll is now closed.

well…I was in a dragonboating team, in Ottawa last year. So I guess I’m well-versed in rich people athletics…or very Canadian haha.

Kind of the reverse of option #2…I’m pretty well-versed in how to play blue blood sports (I was on crutches all through seventh grade and ended up doing a paper on polo because I couldn’t do gym), but I doubt I could actually do them all that well. Kate Mountbatten-Windsor* is sportier than I am and therefore can actually play all of these sports. I just run and watch.

*If we have to insist on giving her a surname like non-royal-highnesses, I’m going to call her Kate Mountbatten-Windsor because it is a really cool name and also the surname Prince William would have if he weren’t a prince.

I’ll be honest– I thought dragonboat racing was a Chinese sport. Because the only time I ever heard of it was on the Bachelorette last week. Also because it sounds more Chinese than Canadian.
So yeah, now I know what it is. Because I watch that show. Shamefully.

Cleveland, OH has a yearly dragonboat race. I saw a lot of beer bellies in it.

      That being said…

      A) I’m seconding the Mountbatten-Windsor movement. Badass.
      B) I’m not nearly athletic enough to pull off what Kate does. I have no doubt she doesn’t just participate in those sporting events, she fucking dominates. I also have no doubt that she’d also excel at, say, kickball, cornhole, or beer pong. I don’t think it’s necessarily a class thing; I think it’s just that she’s damn good at sports.

Well… they also did a Dragon Boat Race on The Bachelorette. Pretty soon Snooki will be leading a race.
