Runway Rundown: Iris Van Herpen’s Magnificent Fall 2011 Couture Show

You look at enough couture shows and you often think, “Wow, that dress costs a ton of money because it actually required 100 hours of hand beading in a little atelier somewhere” or “That suit is made of ostrich skin, that is a very expensive material.” …But then you come across something like Dutch designer Iris van Herpen’s Fall 2011 couture collection and you think, “This person actually sees the world a different way.” And it’s awesome.

Herpen, who has worked with McQueen,* employs “3D rapid laser prototyping techniques” to achieve her astonishing looks. See them all ahead.

*Don’t these remind you of his armadillo shoes?

Want. Those. Shoes. (And yes, they remind me of the Armadillos. Which is why I want them.)

Every single outfit blows my mind. Those are such amazing pieces of art. I love them all! But the 12th piece, the one that looks like water splashing, I don’t even know what to say other than it’s incredible!

One of my friends actually worked with her on that last one, the white dress. It was 3D printed. Most of these pieces really blow my mind.
