Video: R.I.P. Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse, troubled English soul singer, has died at the age of 27. Whatever you thought of her before, this is incredibly sad. Personally, I was always a fan of her retro style, her bad ass attitude, and of course, those amazing pipes. (And, as a fellow short Jewish girl, I also appreciated her fearless embrace of ballet flats.) As an example of troubled female celebrity, she was a textbook case: the drugs, the isolation, the weird relationship with the paparazzi. It was especially chilling to watch her fight a losing battle with addiction in front of hundreds of cameras. Hundreds of cameras engaged in making images of a clearly sick person for people to gawk unkindly at, because she was famous. I know several people who’ve struggled with drug addiction, and I can’t think of anything worse for someone’s chances of recovery than to suddenly have a seemingly unlimited amount of money and “friends” who don’t actually care about your well being. For whatever reason, this effect seems even more pronounced with women: Marilyn Monroe, Janis Joplin, the list goes on.

Here are some videos of Amy in happier times. Hopefully, she will be remembered for her tremendous talent and not the issues that plagued her. Rest in peace, lady.
