Tyra Banks’ Novel ‘Modelland’ Is a Fashion-Inspired ‘Hunger Games’ Knockoff

Tyra Banks’ novel Modelland comes out on September 13. The book is about a fictional world where families push their daughters to compete for the chance to be taken to a place called, well, Modelland. There, the girls learn to become “Intoxibellas,” which are probably a mix of geishas and superheroes. The first chapter is up on Barnes and Noble’s website, and I couldn’t help but notice how many similarities Modelland has with The Hunger Games. That’s a smart move on Tyra’s part, since the Hunger Games trilogy is the biggest thing in Hollywood right now. So where are the overlaps?

The Selection

The first chapter of Modelland features young and sometimes terrified girls walking up and down a giant runway waiting to see if any of them are chosen. That’s pretty similar to the Reaping that opens the first Hunger Games book, although the outcomes – the person picked at the Reaping is sent to an arena where they kill or get killed by other teenagers – are quite different. The age cutoff for Modelland is thirteen; for the Hunger Games it’s fourteen. [Author's note: the cutoff for the Hunger Games reaping is 12, since Prim is 12 in the first book. Thanks to the commenters who caught that error!] Although we don’t learn much about LaDorno, where Tookie lives, it sounds like a poor, depressed area where a family’s hope for security is their daughter being chosen to go to Modelland and support them. Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of The Hunger Games, is from a poverty-stricken area called District 12. Although being chosen for the hunger games means the possibility of death, winning means a free home, a stipend for life, and the ability to take care of family members.

The Sisters

The heroine of Modelland is Tookie de la Creme, who is clearly based on Tyra. Tookie is a perfect saint and is just there to support her sister, Myrracle, who wants to be chosen for Modelland. However, Myrracle is having trouble staying on the runway with all the other girls pushing each other out of the way in a bid to be the last one standing. Tookie goes up to help her sister and (spoiler alert!) gets chosen for Modelland instead. The Reaping scene also features the main character (Katniss) and her sister Prim, but Katniss volunteers to go instead of Prim while Tookie is chosen over her sister.

The Overseers

All the girls walking on the giant runway are hoping to get spotted by The Scouts, who are evidently an alt-reality version of modeling scouts. One of them is described as “a slender, mysterious looking woman in a black metallic jumpsuit.” Another one wears “a bathing suit ensemble that appeared to be made of rocks.” The Scouts say nothing; they simply pull the chosen girl or girls from the runway and disappear. In The Hunger Games, police from The Capitol – which controls all of the dystopic land of Panem – attend the Reaping and monitor the citizens to make sure everyone shows up for the event. Unlike the Scouts, they are not glamorous, and their arrival is not welcomed by anyone in the crowd.

The Hometown Hottie

During the runway show, Tookie is almost driven to distraction by Theophilus Lovelaces, the local hot guy and her crush. He seems unimpressed by the whole process, and Tookie resists the urge to smack-talk the other girls in front of him. Katniss’ best friend in District 12 is the hot older guy Gale Hawthorne, who promises to look after Katniss’ mother and sister while she’s away preparing for the Games. Although I don’t know what happens in the rest of Modelland, something tells me this brief scene isn’t the only time we’ll see Theophilus. As for Gale, he becomes one of the series’ most important characters.

You know what this means? It’s only a matter of time until we see Modelland: The Movie.

So I didn’t know anything about The Hunger Games except what the thirteen-year-old girl I used to tutor (and who is now my email friend) told me. (What can I say; I didn’t know what Twilight was until they started making the movies) And from your first paragraph, I saw similarities. That doesn’t look good for arguments of originality.

I don’t think Tyra Banks should be allowed to write books. She can barely speak coherently.

I’ve never read The Hunger Games but I do know a bit about them from things I’ve read and this does sound very similar. Whether or not it was a wise choice for Tyra to base her book off the series is debatable. The Hunger Games is a very popular series and, although Tyra definitely seemed to have very little originality with her plot thus far, you have to admit that it could reach a whole different crowd altogether while still snagging HG fans as well. It was either a brilliant plan for her to make more money while still doing what she does best: fashion; or it was a very poor attempt at taking someone else’s story and making it her own. I’m hoping that Tyra gets more creative in the later chapters because nobody wants to spend money on what’s practically a piece of Hunger Games fanfiction when we can find similar stories online.

Does Theophilus Lovelace sound an awful lot like Xenophilius Lovegood from the Harry Potter series, or is it just me…?

    • Saskia

Thank you!! It does. And I thought I was the only one to notice

  • Lance

The age cut off in the hunger games is 18. People between the ages of 12-18 compete!

  • Em @ Sash & Em

Wow. This sounds absurd. Tyra Banks basically skimmed entirely TOO MANY similarities/characteristics from other books…Hunger Games, Harry Potter & the Sookie Stackhouse series for starters.

    Completely absurd.

  • Lili

This is ridiculous! It’s only a matter of time before she gets sued. It’s obvious these post-apocalyptic types of books are popular, but can’t she do something that doesn’t sound like a complete rip-off of The Hunger Games and the names from Harry Potter? She could do something much better with her slight knowledge of fashion.

  • Tribute

actually, i find this is nothing like the hunger games. the premise of the book seems pretty shallow and the names too cliche and tries too hard. i would like to think the hunger games at least has got more emotional depth than whatever this will turn out to be. because i have a feeling it’ll just be that the main character turns out to be stunning but she doesn’t know it, she brings down the whole modelland with like…inner goodness and beauty or something.

not to sound like the fangirl that i am, but the hunger games is about real loss, and the characters all have flaws. to be honest, i find it kind of insulting for it to be compared to modelland.

    • ALS

I hope so too. I also don’t think Tyra Banks is bright enough to make so many comparisons to such amazing stories.

  • Holly

I agree with Tribute. Judging from the premise, I can pretty much know what the outcome will be. :P

  • hungergamesfan

okay to who ever wrote this obviously has no idea what the modelling world is like. This story is not a rip off of the Hunger Games it seems to be closer to Tyra’s TV show America’s Next Top Model. Girls competing for attention on the runway, girls who originally didn’t plan to be a part of the show spotted and chosen. In the Hunger Games NO ONE wants to become a Tribute. Also you say that Tookie didn’t want to be there and her sister did. In the Hunger Games Katniss doesn’t want her sister in the games so to protect her she volunteers for her. Also there is always a love interest in the stories. Gale sounds nothing like this guy. This is well set out but it is completely idiotic, these two stories may be similar, but what stories aren’t these days when you get to the bottom of them.

I love the hunger games and yes modelland does sound like the series but none of you guys have read the book yet so i don’t think the best thing to do is judge her right now. Besides i don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking a think or two from your favorite books and adding your own thoughts into it. maybe she just decided to simplize the plot and not have to think to hard. i think tyra is smart enough to notice the similarities between the two books so don’t think all the negative comments are helping.
