How To Grow Out Your Bangs (Without Going Crazy)

For the past few months, I’ve been trying to grow out my bangs. I thought it would make me look more mature, I also sort of thought I’d be done by now. But no, turns out growing out hair takes forever. Fucking forever. And in the meantime, you’re blind, sort of like Cousin Itt. Just blind, stumbling around into things, your bangs drooping over your nose, your sight-line entirely blocked off. So, yeah, the maturity thing isn’t working out so well.

God, it’s the wost. Here are some things you can do to make it slightly less unbearable.

I always wore my bangs curly when I was growing them out, and usually I’d put my hair up in the back, too, which made them look like they were deliberate rather than in-transition. And bobby pins aren’t so bad if you push them under the rest of your hair rather than over, so no one can see them. That might only work once your bangs reach a certain length, though.

Boho scarves. Pin your bangs back, get a wide scarf, and tie around your head. Leave the rest of your hair down, if you want, or if you can pull off a big messy bun, even better.

And I think headbands work better if you make them slightly ridiculous. And by ridiculous, I mean awesome. Go big…no one’s going to notice it’s holding bangs back if it’s practically a British wedding hat. Wear funky jeweled headbands, or big poufy flowers. Nordstrom has AMAZING headbands…when I discovered their little accessories department, I went fucking crazy-dancing in the store.

The braid works a lot better if you do California girl surf hair too. Your hair can’t be sleek if you’re gonna pull that off. But a little salt spray makes it acceptable.

I’m currently growing mine out, too. Not because they make me look 12, I just got tired of trimming them all the damn time. I do the big headband or scarf thing sometimes, but most days I’ll make a little twist-thing with them and pin it to the side, under a layer of hair so the pins stay hidden. Way easier and quicker than the mini french braid, and cute without being too childish.

Braid them in the front and hairspray them – Instant unicorn!
