Video: Ad Features Lesbian Couple Without Making Their Gayness The Butt Of A Joke

A new commercial for K-Y’s “K-Y Intense” lube features a lesbian couple being totally normal. They wear pajamas, they talk about their relationship, and they even (gasp!) have sex with each other. (BUT HOW DOES THAT WORK WITH TWO WOMEN??)

The ad is fairly short and straightforward, but in a media landscape where lesbians are generally portrayed as mean, hairy ball-breakers, jerk-off material for dudes, or the butt of some terrible joke, it’s sadly remarkable to see a lesbian couple portrayed like any “regular” couple would be, without having their sexuality made the focal point. Obviously, we still have a long way to go before ads truly reflect the multitude of people who might buy the product in question (we are probably not going to see a K-Y ad featuring a fat, disabled, genderqueer, polyamorous couple any time soon), but we have to start somewhere, and even a nice, “normal” lesbian couple is still going to be incredibly challenging for much of the country to accept.

Kudos to you, K-Y marketing people. I may even buy some of your weird tingly sex ooze to show my support. (Related: Has anyone ever used this stuff? Did you, like Alex and Emma, find it to be a “good purchase,” or did it make your vagina fall off and crawl away? Inquiring minds want to know.)

    It burned my vagina. Hard.

It worked great for me, and usually I find these sort of products to be irritating rather than stimulating.

Perhaps a sign of the times that society is progressively accepting unorthodox relationships, but perhaps more of a positive sign of our times because manufacturers are looking to figure in lifestyles that it would have once declined to validate. Then again branching off to new markets could have possibly swayed KY to take the route to consumer emancipation.

    Yeast infection city.

      Hey Casey,

Are you saying that the K-Y® Brand INTENSE product gave you a yeast infection, or that it will cause yeast infections between two women using it? I’m just wondering, because I’m a gay woman, and I’ve only been intimate with women, and I’ve never had a yeast infection in my entire life. I sure wouldn’t want to start having them if I used this product.

I write books for gay, bisexual and questioning women who are coming out, and sensuality support guides for both women and men. When I first read that K-Y was doing a commercial featuring a young lesbian couple, I thought, “Why would young lesbians need K-Y® Brand Lubricants? I’ve never heard of any pre-menopausal lesbian couples having that particular problem in the bedroom in any of the research I’ve done.” But then I watched the Alex and Emma K-Y® video, and it’s advertising the the K-Y® Brand INTENSE. I thought, “I’m not sure how much more intense it can get between two women–we might just catch on fire!” : ) I’m glad to see a company is actually taking the risk of selling to the LGBT Community–cute commercial too!

We buy it – not for me, actually, but for him. Much better than dry when I’m using my hand. (I think I’ve used it for vagina-times, like, once. Didn’t notice it at all. I was disappointed.)

It’s pleasantly tingly, but if you use it after being fucked raw (um, cannot think of a less vulgar way to say that) then yeah..it’s irritating and burn-y.
