Can Smoking Pot Make You Skinny?

Today, in news of the counter-intuitive: a new study suggests that people who smoke pot regularly are at lower risk for obesity than the general population, despite the drug’s appetite-stimulating properties. This directly contradicts empirical evidence my associates and I have gathered over the course of much late night culinary experimentation. Am I to believe that between the soup sandwiches and the spaghetti tacos, we have somehow inadvertently created a superfood?

In a combined survey of about 50,000 people, researchers found 22-25% of the non pot smokers to be obese, while only 16-17% of cannabis users were. Furthermore, the people who smoked pot at least three times a week had even lower rates of obesity (~14%). The more you blaze, the thinner you stays!

They have yet to figure out if this is a correlation or a causation, but here’s a theory: weed costs money. A lot of weed costs a lot of money. We already know that obesity is tied to socioeconomic factors, so maybe the people who can afford to keep themselves in Purple Haze are the same ones who can afford healthy food and gym memberships? Then there is the fact that a lot of the people who smoke weed are dirty, dirty hippies. Everyone knows those people are, like, way into raw vegan whatever and outdoor activities where they commune with Gaia.

My favorite part of the study comes at the end, where the scientists are basically like, “sure, smoking weed might help you stay thin, appreciate nature documentaries and generally have an awesome time, but you still shouldn’t do it because DRUGS ARE BAD, MMKAY?” Whatever, nerds. Call me if you need someone to smoke some of those medical grade lab joints and then do a puzzle or something.

I once dated a guy that used to say “Fruit and pot make you hot”

I smoke and do crosswords with my boyfriend. And I have ALWAYS wanted to try the medical grade stuff.

A lot people claim it’s because weed makes you so hungry when high if you smoke often you get desenitized to regular hunger and so, eat only when high.

Jillian- I’ve heard this a lot too (being from Denver)! I don’t think it’s true but some pot smokers form habits around eating similar to the way a cigarette smoker might. Some smokers make a habit of smoking before eating and that may or may not mean they “can’t” eat with smoking. I personally think most everyone can eat without pot.

Being a regular user, my thing is that pot doesn’t “make” you skinny but some habits might. For example, I don’t get the munchies but, on a good day, I’m usually too stoned to worry about eating chips and shit. I do drink a ton of water due to cotton mouth.

It’s different for other users of course.

I agree. As a regular pot smoker in the evenings (after I get home from work) I smoke before I eat dinner. If I don’t smoke I often can’t eat dinner. However since I don’t smoke during the day Breakfast and lunch are fine. As far as munchies, everyone is different. Sometime I get them sometimes I don’t. But I only snack after I smoke. Therefore I don’t snack during the day at all. BTW I am thin.

I don’t know how they gathered the statistics for this study, but my theory is that the pot smoking group is statistically younger and therefore statistically thinner.

This is so true! I knew it!!! My boyfriend and I have been experiencing a lot of weightloss and I didn’t know why. We eat a lot sober or not and we still can’t seem to hold it down. It comes in and goes out the other end. I’m more skinner then I have ever been.

Drugs are bad for you. It may sound nerdy and whatnot, but that’s the cold, hard truth. Smoking and doing drugs is not a proper way to treat your body, no matter the results. Anyway, the consequences aren’t worth it.

You lose weight only if you are ADDICTED. Once your body is used to getting hungry only after you have smoked pot, “which it does if you smoke before you eat and or smoke multiple times a day for long enough,” one may find that there NATURAL appetite has been interrupted. Hunger is a very complicated physiological process. When I quit smoking weed I gained 15 lbs in a year easy. And im a thin guy so this was great news. A lot of hardcore stoners will argue with me here but hey I smoked for over 10 years and it got to a point where i wasn’t hungry unless I smoked pot. That is ADDICTION. One way or another. Some people are more likely to become an addict that others you just have to know yourself.

You barely ever get caught so there really are no consequences
