We’ve been talking a lot lately about shitty shirts that are made for girls, most of which encourage them to be morons and celebrate hotness over intelligence. I think we can all agree that that’s a really dumb message to send to anyone, but particularly young women who are (still!) battling the notion that the only thing that matters about them is their looks, and that being smart is unattractive.
Well, lest the gentlemen among us feel left out, now there’s a shirt with a horrible message for them, too. British men’s clothing chain Topman recently released the above t-shirt, which seems to allude to the various reasons that a guy might give for abusing his partner: “You provoked me,” “I was drunk,” “I hate you.” The whole thing is a shitshow, and generated scathing comments online. According to the Daily Mail, the shirt is now listed as “sold out” on the company’s website, and a quick search by us turned up no trace of it at all.
But to add insult to injury, Topman spokespeople released one of those apologies; you know, the “we’re sorry you got upset” kind:
A spokesman for Topman said in a statement: ‘We have received some negative feedback regarding two of our printed T-shirts.
‘Whilst we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be light hearted and carried no serious meaning we have made the decision to remove these from store and on-line as soon as possible.
‘We would like to apologise to those who may have been offended by these designs.’
Not that we should expect much more of a refined notion of comedy — or really, a notion of comedy at all — from a company that also makes men’s shirts that read, “They call it the flavour saver” (this one comes complete with an image that suggests that the wearer actually doesn’t know why they call it the flavor saver), “This is what perfection looks like,” and “Instant Idiot: Just add beer.”
