After nearly twenty years spent playing bit parts and “character actress” characters, Melissa McCarthy is enjoying her sudden burst of fame. Fresh off an Emmy win for Mike and Molly and an impressive turn in Bridesmaids, the multi-talented star is now turning her attentions to an area that needs all the help it can get: plus-size fashion. “Trying to find stuff that’s still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible,” she recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle.” This is so, so true. I feel that way about clothing and I’m not even plus-size, just bigger than the fashion industry says I should be.
It was this sentiment that led her to design her own Emmys dress (along with couture dressmaker Daniella Pearl), and now, it’s also leading her to launch her own line of plus-size clothing with Pearl. There are zero details about the line as of yet, and I’m not sure how active a role McCarthy will have time to take in it, what with the amount she’s been working lately, but she doesn’t seem like the kind of person to half-ass something. I mean, I don’t know her, I just get that feeling.
Good luck to you, Melissa McCarthy! May your plus-size line flatter the body of the average American woman.
