Yesterday, a quote from Johnny Depp’s upcoming interview with Vanity Fair was widely disseminated. In it, Depp compares photo shoots to being raped:
Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped … It feels like a kind of weird — just weird, man… Whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like — you just feel dumb.
Unsurprisingly, Depp issued an apology today about the comments, claiming that it wasn’t his intention to offend, and that of course he doesn’t really think that getting your picture taken is anything like being sexually assaulted. According to FOX News, Depp had this to say:
“I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling,” Depp said. “I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”
In other words, this story is over as soon as it began. It seems that Depp’s most egregious offense here wasn’t his intention, but his apparent ongoing refusal to accept that he’s a famous actor, and that sometimes, he’s being recorded.
Oh, and also that his profession goes hand in hand with photo shoots.
