I mean, I think that I pretty much get this ad. Selena Gomez is a good girl, and this video features her alter ego, and it’s supposed to be funny because she’s singing “congratulations to me” about landing a gig hosting MTV’s Europe Music Awards.
But on some of those points, we miss, Selena. We swing, and we miss.
Straight out of the gate, I will say that Gomez gets major props for doing this in the first place. I would be fucking terrified to perform a rap in any kind of a public setting, and frankly, as well I should be. But Gomez quickly demonstrates that she actually can rap — twist! — making the video not wholly painful to watch, just…odd.
It’s odd in part because you know it’s supposed to be funny, but it isn’t. It’s also odd because it should be funny — “congratulations to me” is a decidedly humorous thing to say, particularly when set to music. But furthermore, while all this potential for humor is kind of swirling about in the air, it’s impossible not to be distracted by Gomez’ tits, which are suddenly hugely on display after years of being only modestly presented.
Anyway, weird. Overall I give this one and maybe a quarter thumbs up.
