My Own Slut-O-Ween Story: I Was Miss Kitty From “Gunsmoke”

My step-father was a big fan of the old series, “Gunsmoke.” I sometimes watched it as well, and thought that Miss Kitty was one of the prettiest ladies on television. Plus, she was sassy, and I have always been a fan of sassy women. So, when I found an old-timey looking dress at a yard sale with my mom, I knew exactly what I wanted to be for Halloween…a saloon girl! Did I mention that I was in the first grade?

This dress was the most beautiful thing that I had ever seen. It had a cream colored bodice with black sleeves and a black skirt. I got to wear makeup! And jewelry! And my mom’s lacy black gloves that were left over from being utterly fabulous in the eighties! The only thing about the costume that bothered me at all was the fact that my mom insisted on stuffing the top of it so it didn’t collapse all over my six year old chest. Apparently, I already had a bit of modesty in me, because I pulled the socks out of my dress as soon as I got on the bus and out of her line of sight.

I don’t remember much else about the costume. I don’t think my mom got any calls from the principal, nor do I remember receiving any crap at the hands of other students. I just remember loving the dress, and feeling pretty, and wishing I could wear it every day. Now, I look back and think, “Man…I essentially dressed up as a prostitute when I was only six.” Thank god I have a son, so I won’t have to worry about a daughter wanting to wear slutty costumes!

This week, TheGloss is celebrating slut-o-ween and is accepting submissions about your own slut-o-ween costume. The best story will win a prize from TheGloss.
