Video: The Extended Trailer For TLC’s ‘The Virgin Diaries’ Is Predictably Disturbing

Just a few days after the Youtube clip of their short promo went viral, TLC (the “L” stands for “Look at these freaks”) has released a longer trailer for their new show The Virgin Diaries. If you were hoping the show would depict adult virgins as normal, mature, well-adjusted people, you’re going to have to hope a little harder.

As you can see in the video above, the clip shows the infamously terrible kissers playing on a seesaw as they discuss the details of their wedding night:

WOMAN: I think that you should take a shower first, and then I’ll take a shower. Then I’ll put on my lingerie. Then I’ll come into the room.
MAN: And I’ll have a surprise waiting for you!
WOMAN: But I’ll have a surprise waiting for you and we’ll have our robes on and we’ll slowly take our robes off and then do foreplay and then have sex!

This is all intercut with suggestive footage of them playing on the seesaw. Is TLC trying to make me think all adult virgins are giant children? Because it’s working. I’m trying really hard not to judge them for their lifestyle choices, but it’s viscerally disturbing for me to hear people in their thirties talk about sex like they’re still in high school, and I have to wonder if they’re a bit developmentally delayed, either due to disability, or the repressive culture in which they were raised. This clip gave me a few guilty chuckles, but more than that, it made me mildly uneasy. Is TLC exploiting these people?

On the one hand, I’d like to see adult virgins portrayed in a more “they’re just like us!” kind of way. Surely there are some out there who do not come off so…laggardly? On the other hand, the couple in the clip is composed of real people, and their story is a true one. I do not doubt that some (not all, and not even most, but some!) adult virgins actually are developmentally delayed, and their stories are valid, too. But I’m still not confident TLC is going to treat them with respect. Basically, these kids seem pretty naive, and I’m not sure they fully understood that they were signing up for Youtube infamy when they agreed to be on the show.

Few times have I felt this embarrassed for someone else. This is just painfully disturbing. By painfully I mean like, a thousand needles in the eyeball painful. .

I don’t know why people find the existence of adult male virgins so odd. Straight male sexual behavior follows a Pareto distribution, where 20 percent of the men get 80 percent of the sex. That means most guys have to fight for the leftovers, and in every generation a few guys can’t even get to the trough. Even the guys who have a few sexual relationships early in life often wind up sexually repudiated by women after a few years, like George Sodini.

The evolutionary psychologist Roy Baumeister also argues from evidence in the human genome that over the course of human evolution, the majority of males who reached sexual maturity died without offspring, probably on the order of 60 percent. That figure must include a lot of adult virgins.

I think it’s safe to say that TLC is not going to treat any adult virgin with respect. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why people choose to wait (religious, wanting a serious commitment-however the couple chooses to define it, etc.) to have sex, and out of the adult virgins I know, they’re all able to talk about sex like adults.

And as Sam said, this is just painfully embarrassing/distrubing. I feel bad for this couple.

“On the one hand, I’d like to see adult virgins portrayed in a more “they’re just like us!” kind of way. ”

      But they’re NOT like us.
Someone who , in their thirties , hasn’t AT LEAST played doctor or experimented or SOMETHING clearly has personal development issues!

It’s NOT normal to NOT have urges by that age and think that you are “saving” yourself for something SPESHULL !

Sex is fun , but it’s not some kind of once in a lifetime event that people should make such a big deal of!

Of course they’re not “just like” you. No one is just like you. I probably had sex at a different age then you did, but that doesn’t make me weird or sick. My friend waited to have sex until she was about 28-29, because she’s very religious and wanted to save herself until marriage. My cousin waited to kiss her boyfriend until they were engaged! Some people have urges, some don’t. Some are asexual or demisexual or simply want to wait for their own reasons. Some people feel differently about sex then you, and that doesn’t give you a license to disrespect them.
