Teen Mom Shoots Intruder Dead To Protect Baby

Sarah McKinley, 18, of Blanchard, Oklahoma recently shot and killed a man who broke into her house while she was alone with her baby. Right before shooting him, and as he was trying to force his way in, the young mom holed up in the bedroom and fed her baby a bottle.

McKinley, whose husband recently died of cancer, had apparently met the intruder, Justin Martin, when he stopped by her house after the funeral claiming to be a neighbor. She didn’t let him in.

During the Dec. 31 break-in, McKinley called 911 and told them that someone was trying to break in. “”I’ve got two guns in my hand — Is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?” she said. The operator told her to “do what you have to do to protect your baby.”

Martin and his accomplice — Dustin Stewart, who was later arrested — did manage to get in, then lunged at McKinley with a hunting knife. She killed him with one shot to the chest.

In an interview following the incident, McKinley told reporters that she had to decide between the intruder and her son.

“I knew that I was going to have to choose him or my son, and it wasn’t going to be my son,” she said. “I did what I had to do. There’s nothing more dangerous than a mother with her child.”

So how does everyone feel about this?

Self-defense: Check. Legally owned weapons: Check. Knowledge of how to use them without harm to anyone but the intended target: Check. Cessation of violence once objective was complete: Check.

I’d say she did the right thing in her situation. Would’ve been nicer to incapacitate instead of kill, but you do what you have to do with what you’re presented with.

Right on girl, you do what you have to do. Don’t mess with a mother and her child.

Can not blame her for protecting her baby!

Good, there are a lot of people that say firearms have no purpose to be in the hands of civilians. Well this is a shining example of a terrible event that would have been significantly worse if she was not armed.
Im glad the innocent came out alive and (aside from mentally, which is of course still terrible) undamaged.

I think the comment is wrong….what she means is that she chose her son.

“I knew that I was going to have to choose him or my son, and it wasn’t going to be my son,” she said. “I did what I had to do. There’s nothing more dangerous than a mother with her child.”

Anyone who thinks law-abiding citizens shouldn’t have access to guns should read this story. The saying “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns” exists for a reason. Good on her!
