Joan Rivers Attempts To Slut-Shame Chelsea Handler

Joan Rivers is making internet waves today for her mean-spirited attempts to undermine the career of fellow comedienne Chelsea Handler by saying she slept her way to prominence. While the two women have never loved each other (narcissism of small differences much?), the feud just bubbled up again via a recent appearance on Howard Stern‘s radio show by Ms. Handler. When asked about what was going on between her and Joan Rivers, Handler replied:

What the fuck do I care about Joan Rivers? I saw Joan Rivers the other day at E!, and she said hi. Her and that daughter…Melissa…I don’t think about either one of them, ever. So the fact that Joan Rivers, she got up and made this speech, we were at a Comcast event and you know, they’re giving me Conan’s old stage at Universal…Joan Rivers gets up and she’s like “I would like to thank Chelsea Handler for giving me a career in comedy, heh heh heh,” and then she goes, “congratulations on your stage, Chelsea, cause I don’t even have a dressing room.” And I’m like, “fuck off.”

In addition to being somewhat unkind, this statement was untrue, as Chelsea Handler was clearly thinking about Joan Rivers in that moment, otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to recall a story about her. But the way Joan Rivers responded the next day was even more not-okay:

The girl was on her back fucking the president, we all know that, of the network [Melissa tries to get her to back off from this line of reasoning] She started it! We all know how she got there. She’s fine, she’s ordinary, she’s not a genius…she’s an ordinary girl…she fucked someone high up in the industry and they gave her a break and she’s doing okay. I walk over and say “hello, nice to see you.” You say…ignored me. Who the fuck do you think you are? That’s number one… [tagbox tag="Joan Rivers"]

She’s a drunk, she has her own show, I don’t wish her good luck, I don’t wish her bad luck, I don’t care, I don’t think she’s particularly funny, but don’t you come after me, you whore. [Because taking time out of your day to go on the radio and call someone a whore is a really obvious sign that you don't care about them.]

Whoa there! I know it’s Joan Rivers, but can we all agree that “whore” is one of the laziest go-to insults for a woman that’s ever been invented? It’s right up there next to “fat.” (No wonder they’re sometimes used in conjunction with one another.) Can you imagine Dorothy Parker calling someone a whore? No, because she was smarter and funnier than that.

Also, this goes without saying, but when you call someone a whore, it’s about as degrading to sex workers as calling someone a “faggot” is to gay people. Maybe we can’t all come up with perfectly crafted, hilarious, cutting insults, but we can at least try to do better that that. Especially those of us who are supposed to be funny for a living.

Eh its pretty well known that her and her buddy Whitney slept their way to the top. Neither are funny yet have shows that don’t go away. It’s not to say women aren’t funny, it’s just that they aren’t and aren’t shy about how they got where they did.

Not that I like Joan Rivers or anything, shes pretty cruel to the world. But as a woman, I would rather see a comedienne who got a show through her own merit and not someone who slept her way there. It really isn’t anything to be proud of, or for us to look up to .so if the shoe fits, why not? Like it was said on a previous post about lady insults, an insult is an insult no matter what name you hurl.

I don’t know Chelsea Handler that well, but isn’t her whole thing the fact that she likes to drink a lot and sleep around? I don’t think she’s going to be too insulted by this.

  • Fabel

Doesn’t Chelsea Handler make it part of her job to call Angelina Jolie a whore? All the time? I’m not really inclined to feel sorry for her.

I don’t know–in this instance Chelsea Handler DID use her relationship with the president of E! to get a show. Honestly, I think that should be called out more. It’s a pretty disturbing message for women. I’m sure as hell not going to respect her vs. women who have busted their asses in the comedy scene. I guess “whore” isn’t the right term, but Chelsea Handler just grosses me out.

The anti-Chelsea shit really bothers me. Like her or not, her books have sold in the millions. …The. Millions. That’s because a lot of people find her funny, not because she slept with one particular person.

Because mass appeal must mean it’s quality? Get real. Family Guy is still on, and you will never convince me there is anything of value there.

    • Ashley Cardiff

That’s not at all what I said.

  • Rick Santorum

Say what you will about whores, at least they do their jobs well.
Chelsea on the other hand, appears to be funny, even has a decent delivery, but never actually makes anyone I know laugh. She is the comedy version of the hot stripper that gives you a non-touch lap dance. She moves around alot so the promise is there, however, she never actually gets you off.
Not sure what this has to do with your blog, but I’d rather get a lapdance from Joan anytime.

I laughed my ass off when I read her books! Not so much at her shows, though. But I loooved the books.

  • Extra Extra

Chelsea Handler is one uncouth, damaged, and ungracious comedienne. Who wants to look as ugly as her? And I am glad that Joan Rivers was very honest about her assessment. And Joan’s comedic talents precede her own face surgeries and Chelsea’s dreadful show !

I don’t care for Chelsea Handler, but Joan Rivers is neither talented nor funny, and she looks like a damn clown. She’s just an old hag that hasn’t done much worth mentioning. The fact the she’s on a show critiquing celebrity looks and fashion is irony at it’s finest, especially considering they all look a billion times better than her.

  • hmm

So, we’re supposed to feel sorry for Chelsea who has made a career of slamming other women, Mariah Carey and Angelina Jolie, to name two. I don’t think so. Joan is right about Chelsea and it ‘s a known fact that her relationship with the head of E is responsible for her career advancement. She has no problem being a slut and should have no problem being called one.

“Whoa there! I know it’s Joan Rivers, but can we all agree that “whore” is one of the laziest go-to insults for a woman that’s ever been invented?”

Before I comment – let me put this out there first. I don’t agree with slut-shaming, ever.

However, I don’t think she was being lazy. Joan believes that Chelsea slept with someone in exchange for something else. To me (assuming that’s true) it’s pretty apt usage of the word “whore”.

  • Dee

She is a major slu.. i’m watching her interview with Rosie and she is proud of it

  • NYM

I love them both…Joan Rivers & Chelsea Handler are both hilarious and more alike that either probably care to admit.
BUT in regards to Jamie Peck’s closing statement:
“…Also, this goes without saying, but when you call someone a whore, it’s about as degrading to sex workers as calling someone a “faggot” is to gay people. ”
Seriously -? Degrading sex workers by calling someone a whore?? LOL Taking PC a bit far are you not??

  • Whoreheardtedly

Well, it’s true. Chelsea Handler is a fame and cum-hungry whore.
