Well, you can’t win them all. No matter what you do, there seems to be a 10% factor of those who are going to hate on you. Although fans of Amy Winehouse and Jean Paul Gaultier swooned over his gorgeous Spring 2012 Couture show in Paris this week because it was not only stunning but was devoted to the late singer, her family were none to pleased with his choice.
Gaultier’s reason for paying homage Winehouse was, as he told WWD, “I think Amy Winehouse was truly a fashion icon.”
Shortly after photos of the collection were posted all over fashion blogs Amy’s father, Mitch accused Gaultier of “cashing in” on Winehouse’s style and calling the presentation “shocking.” He continued to tell the Sun:
“The family was upset to see those pictures, they were a total shock… to see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on.” He also added, “We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste.”
Mitch was not the only one who had issue with the collection. Amy’s friend, Kelly Osbourne took to Twitter to express her opinions on the matter by tweeting: ”Although @JPGaultier was paying homage to my dear friend & icon to the world i found it to be lucratively selfish and distasteful!”
As the family just marked the six month anniversary since the passing of Winehouse, perhaps it was just bad timing and emotions were heightened because of it. It’s hard to say where Gaultier’s intentions truly lay on his choice to memorialize the tragic figure, but let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant no harm, only a memorable show with Winehouse as the inspiration.
