Middle School Does The Right Thing, Bans Ugg Boots

Have you ever wished Ugg boots would just go away? The good folks at Pottstown Middle School in Pottstown, PA have, but unlike most people, they didn’t just fantasize longingly about burning all the students’ Ugg boots in one big bonfire. They fucking got off their asses and did something about it.

Okay, so they didn’t actually ban the boots due to fashion concerns, but because students were using them to sneak cell phones into class. Still, it’s a step in the right direction. The ends justify the means. Or is it the other way around in this case?

The new policy on Uggs (and fake Uggs) reads:

Students may continue to wear outdoor boots to and from school to protect them from cold, snow and ice but need to change into a pair of sneakers or shoes before entering homeroom. Students may also continue to wear lace up, tight at the ankle, boots, shoes and high top sneakers.

Naturally, some parents and students were incensed at this action and left angry comments on the local newspaper’s Facebook page. These comments include:

-”Quite absurd. How about a cell phone ban in school, as reasonable footwear is more necessary than a cell phone? UGG…Sounds like fashion profiling…lol!”

Fashion profiling happens your whole entire life, kid. Get used to it.

-”Another of the endless examples of treating symptoms thinking it will solve the underlying problem.”

Except for the underlying problem of bad fashion. That’s being addressed quite directly.

-”Are you seriously kidding me? What I have to say about this topic can’t be posted in any open forum for public viewing. When the schools started paying to raise and clothe my children then maybe…maybe they can have a say in dictating my child’s wardrobe. Totally ridiculous.”

This parent has clearly been warping her child’s sense of appropriate footwear for quite some time. Quick, someone call the child protective services division of the fashion police!

In conclusion: you can sneak your cell phone into class if you like, I don’t care. Just please don’t wear Uggs while you do it, kids. You will thank me for this advice later in life.

I think that this is absurd. I would understand the school’s decision if they banned short shorts and cami tops (they do at my school) but Uggs? Really? There’s nothing inappropriate about a pair of Ugg boots, and the argument that they are used to conceal cell phones is just ridiculous. I’m sure you could hide a cell phone just as easily in a sweatshirt pocket. Quite frankly, I think this whole article is doing nothing but hating on Uggs. The belief that Uggs aren’t fashionable is completely subjective. The writer of this article obviously doesn’t like the boots, but has she ever thought that maybe some people don’t like the shoes that she wears? Everyone thinks they’re a damn fashion critic! Geez.

Weird how someone who writes on a fashion blog things she has the right to criticize fashion. It’s downright scandalous.

  • Eileen

You have to change out of rainboots or snow boots and can’t wear a parka to class. This isn’t weird. Uggs are ugly outerwear .

  • Racing Boots

Nice boots keep you smart and fit and define you from others.also save from all bad seasons.

    Dear Gloss “writers”,

I often wear Uggs in the winter because I go to graduate school in a city with very cold, nasty weather. I don’t care how they look. On other occasions, I wear Earth Shoes or Naots. I think I look nice in those.

They are very, very warm and comfortable for when I have to walk 7 blocks to campus to be at an 8am lecture about Foucauldian counter-conduct.

I get it-you guys hate these. We all get it now. Find new writing material. Meanwhile, I will do my homework while having warm toes.

      Well said!
I don’t own Uggs but I do have a pair of BearPaw’s that I adore! I don’t wear heels very often, flats aren’t always practical in fall/winter, and my sneakers are my gym shoes not every day shoes. I own rain boots and waterproof snow boots but my go to every day shoes are my bear paws. They are comfy, warm, and go with jeans/leggings. I fail to see what the issue is. If you don’t like them don’t wear them.

  • alexandra

Good! They are horrible looking and apparently quite costly too. To that parent bitching about the school buying her kids’ clothes umm…clearly she’s okay financially if she can spend $300 on a pair of boots when you can get nice ones for $50. Also to address every ‘but they’re comfy and i need them for warmth!’ defense ever, i can’t comment on the comfiness but the warmth part? Bitch please. I live in northern alberta canada and I’ve always been able to find warm and nice looking shoes. I just want ugg wearers to stop making excuses and admit they are bad with money and that they like shitty shoes.

    • Avodah

Alex, I’m pretty good with money. I live on a graduate student budget, and I have had this exact pair of boots since I was 16. I am 26 now. I wear them on occasion for warmth and comfort.

God fucking dammit. I also have insulated, waterproof boots, hiking boots and several pairs of ski and wool socks.

      Go fuck yourself.

  • Nancy

LOL people going crazy over their UGGS again! I love theGloss :)

  • Brittany

I love my UGGs. They ARE comfortable and keep my feet warm. I’m not trying to dress up for class, and they go perfectly with skinny jeans and a tee shirt or hoodie when I have to go listen to a lecture at the crack of dawn. I also think it’s ridiculous for a school to tell children they can’t wear boots. This is America, the land of the free, or so I thought. Schools shouldn’t have authority over fashion choices that aren’t inappropriate by the means of showing too much skin. You can sneak in a cell phone plenty of other ways. Can they wear jackets? Are they allowed pockets? You could even hide a cell phone in your bra. This is ridiculous.

I love how people who hate uggs so much always feel the need to say they cost $300-$400. Where the hell do you live? I have 2 pairs of uggs and both of them cost no more then $150. How many of you snobby women have a pair of expensive shoes in YOUR closet that you never even wear? Don’t bitch about people who spent their money on shoes they wear a lot, which means they are worth it, when you probably shell out a heap of cash for something you let sit in your closet unused. They are ugly, but they are also damn comfy and warm. Who are you to say that just cause YOU can’t afford to buy them then no one should. I’d hate to be such a damn snob that i felt better then someone because of the shoes on their feet.

    • NotThumper

      I think I love you. ;)

  • Rainbow

This isn’t an issue regarding appearances, it is about considering matters of children with parents who believe the bigger problem isn’t of their own kids breaking school rules, but the “dictating my child’s wardrobe”! The kids haven’t been taught any better!
Still, as a student attending college, I find there is nothing more disrespectful to my professors or my peers than to show up in clothes I would wear for lounging around. Take the effort to dress up a little! Why would anyone of any age want to send the message of “I just don’t care enough to make an effort!”? UGGS, I find, are glorified house shoes and the house is where they belong. A great American writer Mark Twain once said, “Clothes make the man.”

    • NotThumper

And where exactly do you go to school Rainbow? Where I went the campus was HUGE and out in the middle of nowhere so when it was cold, it was COLD and there was a crap ton of snow. Uggs and similar where not popular or available when I was in school but if they were I would have worn them. As for dressing up, get off your high horse. I paid damn good money to attend school and I wore what I damn well pleased. Respect had nothing to do with it.

Clothes may make the man but I’m a woman and this one doesn’t give a rat’s ass.

  • watchin

UGGs are fine to wear in class. They are not ugly (subjective call) to me at all. I would be glad to let you wear UGGs to church, my home, the office, etc. This is not the 1920s. You can hide your phone in a lot of places (some very dark). This is an attack on UGGs, nothing less.

  • Marissa

Can we please move on??? Your regular Ugg hating isn’t going to make them go away. However, the large number of your readers who like them can certainly stop reading the Gloss.

  • Ashe Fae

Next your going to ban bras, because you don’t know how many girls hide their cell phones in their bras. Why don’t you get off your arses more and ban cell phones at school instead.

  • uggs

i want to know more information about that. how i get that? please reply as soon as possible
