Remember when Cindy Crawford‘s 10-year-old daughter Kaia Gerber landed a Versace campaign? Even though it was for a kid’s collection, we were pretty unsettled by the similarities between Kaia’s affect and the way Versace represents its adult–by which we mean teen–models. We were also annoyed with all the fawning quotes fed to the press, with Crawford gushing, “I’m so thrilled that Kaia was chosen to be part of the first Young Versace Campaign. I have so many fond memories of the times I spent with Gianni and Donatella. There is something so very special about the House of Versace.”
But hey! Not everything in modeling has to be bad! On the same day we were disappointed to learn about Marc Jacobs going against the CFDA’s guidelines and casting very young girls in his show, there’s thankfully some good news in the world of underage models! Cindy Crawford says she’s put a stop to Kaia’s modeling career. The supermodel said, “At this point, she’s too young to pursue a career. There aren’t even a handful of jobs for a 10-year-old girl. But if she’s 17 and wants to try it, of course, what can I say?”
We’re not too hot on the suggestion that Kaia shouldn’t model because there are so few jobs for 10-year-olds, but we are 100% behind the idea that she’s too young to pursue a career. …Specifically that one.
Kind of a bizarre victory, though, that someone noticed a 10-year-old might be too young to model.
