In response to the news that women in the military will move closer to the front lines, hideous asshole/Fox News pundit Liz Trotta had some appalling things to say during a Sunday television appearance about the rape of armed forces servicewomen:
“…the sexual abuse report says that there has been, since 2006, a 64% increase in violent sexual assaults,” she said. “Now, what did they expect? These people are in close contact.”
What did they expect? Sickening enough, but Trotta didn’t stop there. She went on to say that she doesn’t think that the protections for rape victims being set up by the military — like counseling and support programs — were warranted. “I thought the mission of the [armed forces] was to defend and protect us, not the people who were fighting the war,” she said.
Shockingly, some female members of the military don’t agree with Trotta. In an article posted at Jezebel, former Marine Sara Anderson has this to say about Trotta’s remarks:
“Property of male Marines” was never in my job description, and therefore I should never have had to “expect” to be raped. Nowhere in my enlistment contract, not even in the fine print, did I agree to sexual assault as a part of the job. Fox News pundit Liz Trotta’s comments suggesting that servicewomen should “expect” to be raped because they’re in “close contact” with their male colleagues are beyond ignorant; they fall into the category of hate speech.
Anderson goes on to point out that Trotta’s comments don’t just insult female servicemembers; they insult male servicemembers, too, and indeed the entire institution of the armed forces:
Not only does Ms. Trotta’s twisted stance set women’s rights back several decades, once again telling us that despite our abilities and qualifications, we should not be allowed to work in our chosen profession so as to avoid “tempting” violent criminals whom she desires to see continue their employment, but she goes even further to suggest that any male in our armed forces is completely capable of raping his colleagues.
In doing so, she has successfully degraded the entirety of the US military and painted the image of a lawless Old West in an organization that is run on order and discipline. Ms. Trotta has expressed a belief that those in uniform should not be protected by basic laws which govern and protect all other Americans, nor should we be held accountable to these laws.
The whole article is exquisitely and concisely written, and you should go read it in its entirety. In the meantime, you can also sign Anderson’s petition to have Trotta fired.
