Love/Hate Fashion Week: Julia Allison’s Take On Rebecca Taylor

Here at TheGloss, NYFW will be covered by two opposing forces: fashion week first timer Alice Walker Wright, and long time veteran Julia Allison. They’ll be bringing you some insights into the week that promise to go beyond our standard “pretty dresses are fun” take on it. Check out some of Julia’s Fashion Week coverage here and here.

Let’s go back, back to Friday, the second day of New York Fashion Week, and to the Rebeccas. Rebecca Taylor and Rebecca Minkoff were positioned strategically back to back in the 2pm/3pm time slots to confuse any particularly dense fourists (fashionista-tourists, remember? This term will catch on, mark my words. I will make fetch happen!)

Though she is typically known for her feminine, flirty frocks (which is why she’s one of my perenial favorites), this season Taylor veered off course, toward an edgier, black & brown hued aesthetic. That look isn’t generally my bag, but I still found some winning combos.

**BTW, the issue with attending upwards of thirty shows in a seven day period is that invariably they’ll blend together in a soupy mess of chiffon and shearling. You’ll recall a few standouts (that bright red Monique Lhuillier gown!), but you’ll puzzle, fuzzy-brained, over the rest. Were they showing the tailored equestrian pants at Rachel Zoe or Prete & Bruno? (Answer: Zoe) Thus, the somewhat blurry, not-exactly-high-quality iPhone shots, along with some accompanying notes. When it looks like I’m texting from the front row, I’m (probably) not. Instead I’m frantically thumbing stream-of-consciousness notes like this:

R. Taylor Fall 2012 Love/Hate

Warm fuzzy shearling black tights/leggings, as they cover a multitude of sins

Wedges, particularly oxfords

J Alexander, sitting across from me

Furry ankle boots

Detailed metallic studded leggings (badass, but could I pull them off? jury out)

3/4 length sleeve jackets

Boucle short sleeved jacket with ruffle

Long gloves with thumb holes

Arm warmers

Miniskirts with leggings – yessss!

High-waisted skirts – double yessss!

Maxi dress – love – (though maxi dress with dropped waist – hate)

Maxi dress with capped sleeves and sheer panels with a blue dot pattern – best look of the collection

Shapeless shifts

Looking down at my YSLs halfway through show and finding I have toilet paper stuck to bottom of heel. Awesome.

Sheer layers. It’s winter. You layer for a reason. That’s a layer only in hawaii.

Dresses without waists. Why?? Who does this look good on? NO ONE.

The models’ messy hair. I will admit it looks “cool.” I will also admit that I could not pull it off, ever, in any way.

Quilted, cropped motorcycle jackets

Shirts with tails (tails!!) … or like, one giant tail. Almost looks like a butt cover. Not what any girl needs.

Sheer leggings. Again, why??

Leather shorts with an elastic waist. The mind boggles.

Native American prints / Pendleton-esque vibe. No.

Quilted leather miniskirt managed to make the model look fat. That’s impressive.

I hesitate to ask, but is this blogger…differently-abled? Or are complete sentences just SO five minutes ago?

      Either way, ‘fetch’ isn’t happening.

Okay, at least I get which styles the author likes (though I could not make heads or tails of that first three paragraphs – it’s just a word vomit of… well nothing that made any cohesive sense.)

But where are her interviews playing? I keep googling and I can’t find them. She said on her Twitter she was interviewing Rachel Zoe who I am a huge fan of. Where can I see it?

So we get bullet points on what some random person thinks about a show from last week. This is awesome coverage! Maybe next week a review on “Avatar”. I’d like Julia to tell me in point form her loves and hates about the 3D.

    • Gucci Bag! This Season!

Okay, I feel stupid. So the article says she is going to talk about Rebecca Taylor and Rebecca Minkoff… where does she talk about what Rebecca Minkoff showed? She’s one of my fav. designers.

And are the Love/Hates her personal love hates or pursuant to what Rebecca Taylor showed?

I guess I am one of the “particularly dense fourists” that your author is referring to – just caught that – gee thanks, Julia. Maybe I just come off dense as I cannot make out anything she is saying in this article.

Can’t The Gloss do better than an author that insults her readers and then doesn’t even deliver on the premise the article promises?

It seems to me Fashion Week for this writer is just about her own personal preferences. She goes to shows to simply say “I could wear that” or “I love that” or “I could not pull that off, therefore I hate that.”

Can she step outside of herself for just a second and expand her context?

I thought fashion was about having fun and enjoying oneself. This article is about a close minded, boring girl whose opinion of fashion is about as useful as a SA at Macy’s.

OK – I’ll take a different view. I think this is exactly the way anyone’s – be she a stylist or fashion editor or buyer or tourist or blogger – mind would work at a fashion show. What do I like and hate? And it’s all going by pretty fast. It would be my own opinion – whether anyone else agrees with it will show whether I have the sense of potential buyers or not.
And thanks for the comment on sheer layers – I didn’t understand it either.
Hope tomorrow’s write- up will be Rebecca Minkoff.

Really? Because every other blogger I read re: Fashion Week goes to shows and points out trends they’ve noticed. Colors, styles, quirky little touches that they haven’t seen before or haven’t seen in a while. They report on what we can expect to see in the stores for fall. It isn’t a string of “I could never wear that so I hate it” or “This is totally my style and I could pull it off so therefore I love it.”

Has she got some kind of narcissism problem?

      • Jennifer

And I see she missed the Downton Abbey trend that everyone’s writing about the last couple of days.

    • jackie

So The Gloss sent two girls to Fashion Week and this is it?????

You promised we were going to get two very different points of view or AT LEAST A STORY OF SOME SORT?

      Come on.

PS, you taut Julia Allison as some Fashion insider and her videos of Fashion week go to her personal Vimeo???? And others have asked who is she reporting for as it is very clear her assertions that she is working for NBC3 are 100% false.

The Gloss? What’s up? You’re looking foolish, that;s what.
